I'll be interested in other's experiences but for me personally early August has always been more productive than late. Midsummer the walleyes school up hard on deep structure and are usually pretty easy to find. As you get later in the month they seem to be transitioning into a fall pattern (depends on weather) so the fish can be more spread out.
For tactics I like to jig deeper points and reefs or lindy rig/modified lindy rig during the day and move shallower in low light. You can also troll deep cranks during the day or long line shallower early evening. Experiment with live bait. In August fish are eatig pretty hard, baitfish are bigger, more often the biggest minnows work the best but they are hard to keep alive in early August. Smallies will be near similar structure but work shallower or top water in the evening.
I don't know your specific lakes but this is the time of year I go into the Q and BW.
Here are a few August fish from the last couple of years.
