Like someone else stated, there is a cooldown/coldfront moving in next week, ill b there mon-fri. This worries me a lot. They r even saying wed high of 64 and low of 39.

What should I plan to do to catch fish on my 1 trip of the year? Is there anything I can really do about it or just pray the weather changes? Coldfronts like this can shut down fishing for days in my experience.

Cold front+bad fishing+rain+middle school students= a long week when it should b one of the best of the summer. We may need some positive attitude and....more positive attitude.

I am starting to nervous, have been hoping the weather would change but doesn't look like it will.

Don't worry about the weather.I've been in the B-DUB when cold front after cold front moved thru.Just slow your presentation down and enjoy. Bye the way i'm leaving for Basswood in an hour. No worries and good fishin to ya. Fish early morning and late evening and you should catch fish. Try pike fishing in the afternoon. Have a great time . Stay positive....All is good.

You have to adjust your strategies, a cold front will not affect Pike or Lake trout that much. You have to slow down for walleyes, and smallies recover quickly from a colf front. What lake or lakes will you be on and more importantly, what is the water clarity of the lake, because that can make a huge difference in how the fish are affected by and recover from a front.

Yeah, all will work out and we will have a blast either way., u can't help but have a good time up there. I think tues will b the only real tough day cause then it should stabilize, still cold but not keep dropping.

We will b on ester, Hanson, south arm of knife, in that area, knife is super clear, some of the smaller lakes in that area are more pike lakes, we fish fish for whatever is biting.

Thanks for any pointers about fishing in when a cold front settles in on top of u

We'll be up at a camp on Burntside next week and looking at the forecast it looks like the temps will recover pretty quickly after Tuesday. Yes it may slow down a bit but hopefully not too much.

Having said that, we were in over this last Memorial day weekend on a very clear lake during a Mayfly hatch when a cold rainy front moved through.
Just about the worst possible fishing conditions.
I didn't fish a lot but I did not catch one single fish (using live bait on slow lindy rigs and trying slip bobbers as well - and I was marking fish on the locator) - this was on supposedly a decent lake for smallies and eyes.
We left a day early due to the rain...

Is this a time to go to live baits over lures?

I like cold fronts. Fishing can be great as they arrive and as they end. Fish have to eat. If they go without eating, they get hungrier and hungrier. If they know they're about to skip some meals, they binge. If they've skipped some meals, they'll binge again. Gorging is the best. When they're not eating, it's pleasantly cool and gray days are part of the northern experience.

Like molly said, cold fronts will impact fishing but one front won't ruin a whole trip. If you continuously get slammed by multiple cold fronts, the fishing will definitely be slower that week. But if you're getting slammed by repeated cold fronts and storms every day during your trip you should be thankful if slow fishing is the biggest of your worries.

Yup, when u get your permits in January u just dont know what u will get in June...its just a pick the best week for you and then wait 6 months and hope for the best weather.

The temps do look like they will recover pretty quickly, Tues could be a bit rough but they are not calling for rain, just cold temps so always look at the bright side right.

We will try leaches deep on that day i guess. Wonder what will happen to the fish on beds? They have to sit tight i would think but who knows if they are even on beds, i would guess they just got off on the smaller lakes.

We will give it our best shot and see what happens.
Will be a great experience no matter what.
I will post a quick summary when we return.

thanks

Our trip last year mid-june was cool and rainy for half of the 12 days and we did outstanding. I like it when it's cool and rainy. Only downside...my son loves swimming, so it can take away from that activity. Keeps drinking water nice and cool :)

Marshall,
Are you on a route where you can access multiple walleye lakes? If they aren't biting on one, try another. This realy throws off the basecamping concept.
Once a friend and I went out on a good walleye lake in the western BWCA. The day we started on June 1, a massive cold front hit that lasted the entire week. Lake "A" was absolutely dead. The next day, we portaged into lake "B". The difference was immediate. 15 walleyes between us in 2 hours. The next day lake "B" yielded the same results. Lake "A" that evening was dead as usual.
On one trip, we were adamant about Crooked Lake during another 4 day cold front. The results were 5 bass and a northern for the whole week.

Black spinnerbait with gold blades in clear water. Even with a cold front theres still going to be some active fish and they are usually big, use this as your search lure along with a blue silver rattletrap in clear water. For walleyes a cold front is when all the people that didnt want to bring some sort of depthfinder are fishing blind so to speak, because walleye can really stack up sometimes during a cold front, and be in tight locations, and sometimes you have to sit right over the top of them and let the leech perform its majic. If your on a laker lake or if theres one nearby go fish it, they will still be pretty active and will still slam a little cleo. Big smallies are the first to recover when you see the bluebird skies after a cold front, they will be feeding before their smaller brethren recover. p.s. I dont like fishing stained water after a cold front, I just am more comfortable finding them on clear water at that time, just find prime strucutre and look at the deep water sides of that structure.

We just came off of Ester and Hanson end of last week. If you're after smallies I'd target Hanson. We did well with plastics on the far north end just adjacent to the float through from Ester. We also did well on the NW corner of the big island. While you're in the area I'd also recommend Ashdick just NE of Ester. It's a short portage and we had a great day fishing up there using topwaters and tubes. Caught large and smallmouth. We caught some fish in Ester, but not as many as in Hanson or Ashdick. I'm sure it had something to do with water temp being 5+ degrees warmer in Hanson (70) than Ester (64-65).

Pat, I thought Ester was a neat lake. The water clarity was great and we had good luck with the smallies too there. Did you catch any lakers on ashdick or ester? I caught a 33" laker on ester in '06 on the west end of the lake. Was the water levels high?
Sounds like you had a good trip.

Water levels were high from what we were told (didn't have past experience to base it off of). We caught some lakers on Rabbit, but none on Ester. Saw both come to the surface and take hit 2-3' subsurface....pretty cool to watch.

One that we cleaned already had eggs...which seemed pretty weird.
