I know its not in the BWCA, but does anyone know some information on the area. We are looking to camp on whitefish lake and canoe/fish the other lakes on day trips. How is the camping? Any good spots on any of the lakes? Bait? Any tips would be appreciated. Also, is there anywhere else in the area that you would recommend for camping and canoeing day trips with some good fishing? Thanks.

In July 1999 we stayed on Timber lake. This was several days after the blow down and the Ranger at the USFS station scared the rest of my group into changing our plans out of the BW.
The annoying thing was, our planned route would have been fully cleared at that point but we couldn't even get into Frear lake due to all the trees on the portage.

We stayed at a site along the east shore - I believe it was on the point north of the eastern bay.

We had fairly good luck with walleyes (lindy rigging with minnows) across from our site on the western shore - maybe going a little north.

That is about all I remember.

I might be hitting up a few of the lakes in that area come mid-July. All of those Timber-Frear lakes have high walleye numbers according to the DNR's surveys. Whitefish is relatively deep with a maximum depth of 49 feet, so I'm hoping that will be conducive to catching walleye in mid-summer. I camped on Whitefish a few days after opener this year, but didn't have much luck. What struck me as a negative about this lake was the near-absence of some of the indicators of fish one usually looks for such as prominent points, islands, weedbeds, etc. It's a matter of "here's a round lake, and there is the lake basin. just gotta play with the depth is suppose."
