i thought i would start this threat i thought it might be an interesting topic. please list 1 or 2 of your top portages that you have been on personaly not heard of. i'll start with a portage into jap lake off of seagull i think 515 rods up hill and portage to gogebic from clearwater half way is flat to west pike but then uphill to gogebic maybe 425 rods? it doesnt have to be a long one like the portage to eddy from kinife a little 25 rod that wakes you up. pics are always welcomed

I would imagine that paddlers like Arctic, who've paddled the arctic, would have the most interesting portages since I'm guessing he's portaged in many places where paddling would have meant death.
I will paddle eternal, Kevlar and carbon.

To date, the most difficult is the one we just did. Pine lake into Canoe lake. Outfitter said the rods listed on the map were incorrect and that it more like 500 rod? In any case, she was a real thigh burner.
On the plus side, once at the top, it offered some great views.
Runner up, was short stubby little portage, less than 50 rod if memory serves correct. Entering the Bower Trout area, there is one that I think takes you into Marshal Lake that is so steep in areas, you cannot keep the canoe level on your shoulders as it hits the earth in front of you.
Looking forward to the next challenging one. Thank you sir, may I have another....

Some people see nature as being made "Just for them", and view others as an invasive species..... We are always hearing about how Social Security is going to run out of money. How come we never hear about Welfare running out of money? What’s interesting is the first group worked for their money .. the second group did not.” WTF???

ditto on the jap port. did double port on it in AUG of 97'. The trip back for the remaining gear took 50 minutes emptyhanded. And we never stopped. It was jungle like in places and smelled weird.
a close 2nd is the port from Vera into Knife and Stuart into Fox. The later really gets you after you have allready done the 460 from the start. Single portaging way too much stuff.

+1 I suffered through Kiskadinna probably 20+ years ago. Have avoided it ever since. Someone had carved into the sign - "gateway to hell" I would concur....
Keep your line wet....

i don't remember that beaver dam-- but maybe I did it earlier like in 95?? We were coming from Jap to Seagull and it took us awhile to find the port on the Jap side. I remember getting soaked from carrying the canoe through the "jungle",, and it hadn't even rained,, just a lot of moisture on the leaves etc. The creek crossing(s) were interesting,, but the smell in the "jungle" parts was like a pungent odor-- like a weird curry or spice from the East.
Also the port from Vera into Knife -- what made it so bad- was the type of rock change as you get closer to Knife. Slicker then snot when wet and it was raining.

Im pretty sure the one you are talking about is the vernon to brule lake portage. Its short but has a very steep grade. Its steep enough where it is difficult to do going up or down. The rapids and falls that drop from brule to vernon are really neat.
Surprised little trout to misquah lake hasnt been mentioned yet. Long, tough, rocky, hilly, wet in spots. I might not think it was so bad now cause at the time i was tripping with someone who couldnt carry their share of the gear.
Stuart to fox is long. Cherokee to sitka was tough.

Angleworm to Trease. It looked like a "shortcut" so we took it home instead of retracing our (many) steps on the infamous portage directly out to the Echo Trail. Ups, downs, rock, bogs, places to climb through briars where the canoe would get so hung up you had no more footing... But so much shorter! Not.
