Hello

I am heading to Mudro in a couple of weeks. Just wondering if there is a preference to one or the other for fishing. Thought about doing a loop up the river out of fourtown to mooscamp and over to gun and down. That might not be possible this time of year. Be nice to get some nice eating while I am there.

I just returned from a week-long Mudro-Fourtown-Boot-Fairy-Gun and back trip. We were after smallmouth, and the best fishing was on Gun, poorest on Fourtown. Fairy was good too. We could hardly buy a strike from smallies using our standard assortment of Beetle Spins, Roadrunners, Mepps, and Panther Martins. Topwater baits that make noise were the ticket. Good luck, enjoy, be safe.

Just to complete the confusion, I would go to Fourtown(??!!). The western side is fraught(?!) with islands, and that means varied structure. When the wind blows, currents will set up, SOMEPLACE, between islands, schools of walleye/SMB will set up to intercept roaming schools of baitfish. Horse has lot's of points to set up shop, but Fourtown has all that and all the islands. Troll cranks to find fish...catch one...stop, and drop jigs to hammer. Simple(sounds good on paper!)

Fourtown walleye were quite kind to us last week. And, yes, that western shore and the big island are lots of fun.

What days are you going to be there? I will be there Sept 3-6th. Maybe I will see you there.

Hello

I got back today. It was a wonderful trip. We ended up going into Fortown. We did do a day trip to the beach on Horse, but did not do any fishing there. I left a message there in the sand "Math is Cool." We caught a few walleye around the islands on the west side. My friend lost a huge northern. His line broke before he could get it in. That is the story I heard. There are four portages now between Horse and Fortown. The water level is quite low.

Have a great trip.

Did you happen to go to Horse River to know if the water is high enough to even go down it? I was hoping to go on a few of the rivers on the Mudro - Basswood Falls loop down to Gun, Crooked, etc., but maybe I will have to change our plans. Were the entries to the portages muddy with the water being low?

Hello

I did not get to the river. Just the connection between the two lakes and the route into fortown. The entrys were not muddy so much as they were rocky. We portaged though one campsite and carried the canoe over the next low spot, but there is a portage there that we did not notice and used on the way back. Then we came to the 10rod listed on the map. I have a pair of simms lightweight waders that I used. It allowed me to get out and guide the canoe in the shallows. I did not have an experienced paddler in the front. When your heading out from the entry point there are a few low spots and one big rock on the north side about half way though. I would plan extra time to do the river.

Horse River was relatively high -- making for a pleasant day trip -- last Friday... around 4 lift-overs in addition to the 3 marked portages.

We are heading in on Wed sept 5. Would like to go to Horse then to Crooked then to Friday bay and back down Gull Fairy Boot Fourtown.

I heard the sites in Crooked are nice and the fishing is good.

So the Horse River water level is good then ?

Does any one know what the Walleyes are doing in Crooked ? At what depth there ?

Is 5 days enough for that loop ? Maybe that should be on the trip route forum but I thought there were recent trips from this forum in that area.
