Where can we find walleye in early September through the Seagull lake entry point? We plan to go in as far as Kekekabic, South Arm of Knife, maybe south to Gabi or Little Sag...we don't have a set plan yet, other than our entry date on the first of September through Seagull. Once we find them - what is the recommended technique and tackle for catching them? We've been on many BWCA trips and always catch plenty of northerns, as well as large and smallmouth bass - but this time walleye will be our target!
if your targeting walleyes , seagull-alpine-ogish-southarm are the lakes you would want to target. i'm far from a walleye expert but i would troll with diving crankbaits. if you bring a electronic depth finder may help. i will add this you could get some respectable pike in eddy but the south arm-knife has everything.
Pretty general info but....if you fish any shallow dark water lakes look for weeds with rock/sand bottom. The fish will be in or on the edge of these weeds in about 4'-8' of water. Also look for rock piles/humps and points that give a little depth change. Toss in some wind and you have a good chance of sticking fish.
Clear water they will probably be a bit deeper around 10'-14'.
Ultra clear water they could be 20'-30' down. Fishing low light conditions or at night will give you the best bite.
I would troll leeches and/or Rattl'n Raps. I would also slip bobber leeches on the humps, points, weeds, and islands.
