I lost the second piece on my 2 piece shakespeare agility rod combo to the river a few months ago, and now I have the reel and the first half of the rod with one guide...I was just wondering, could it possibly work for me to use this just for vertical jigging? In some ways it seems to me like it would work conveniently and I think I could easily sense what is going on with the jig with this kind of setup...so would it work?

Might be convenient for spooling up your line, but once a fish was hooked you wouldn't be much better off than hand lining.
