Ive fished Basswood prairie portage falls many times. Have not done very well on walleyes. Ive fished lst week of june into lst week of july.. we have caught many many nice smallmouth here. Usually just drift a leech with split shot. Caught a few eyes. But never that magic moment. Anyone else score big on eyes in that area

Caught big pike in May. Didn't walleye fish. Caught many big walleye in North Bay though.

I pass through there every year in late May. On occasion I've noticed the boats below the falls hammering the walleye. Most times I don't notice much action.

No need to triple post, HDDurpree. Guest Paddlers don't earn trees. =)

Also caught big pike there in May. There was a boat on the right side of where the water flows catching walleye, we were on the left side catching nothing.

Where is North Bay?

I've done well on smallmouth and walleye on Bayley Bay, but have only ever caught one fish off PP.

Bassmasterson, North Bay is a bit further North on Basswood, but the most direct route from PP is through Burke.

North Bay is the far north arm of Basswood Lake that is actually pretty far into Canadian waters.

Rats.

Has anyone gone to Basswood through Fall/Newton lakes? Are there truck portages or do you have to use portage wheels for a boat?

Those are no longer motorized. You can use portage wheels however.

Been fishing Prairie portage area for 15 years on the last week of May. Found that when the water has been on the cold side (high 30's-40's) Walleye will stack in the falls. Last year the water was 35-38 degrees and we hammered the Walleyes there. Out of our group of three boats we got three Walleye in the 28" to 30" range As soon as the the water warms more than that the Majority of the Walleye move out and the Bass come in.

A pretty consistent producer for the most part. I have had luck early season dragging a big minnow with a sinker about 18" up the line for a mixed bag of fish. Most walleyes were caught earlier in the season as other have already said. Bass are always there and have caught several northerns in the 10-12 lb range in there. Early and late in the day are best, the more current the better hence the early season action.

The Fall to Newton, and Newton to Pipestone Bay of Basswood Lake were never motorized portages. (portage wheel only)
The formerly motorized Four Mile Portage from Fall Lake to Basswood Lake is no longer recognized as an entry point to Basswood Lake, even though dog mushers use it in the winter months.
