What's up with the lack of current fishing reports?

The one at elyfishing.com is going on 2 weeks old.

The Ely area lakes are not listed on the statewide reports linked to sites like outdoorsweekly.com and exploreminnesota.com...

WHERE can a report (updated at least weekly) be had online?

I read the fishing contest results weekly on the Echo's website, but that's not exactly what I'm looking for. I'd like to know (for BWCA area lakes) what fish are biting, where, at what depths, on what lures, etc. that is usually found in weekly reports...

Any ideas where this can be found?

Am I just not looking hard enough?

Try checking out fishingminnesota.com

They have a forum with good tips and reports. The forum is broken up by region so the BWCA/Duluth area have there own section. If no reports are posted just post a question asking for info on the specific area you are looking at. Usually you will get some info in a day or so.

Lots of good info to be had all over this site as well, I just found it this year and have learned alot already.

We post fishing reports on several sites. But as much as I try to get them done every week, it is hard to find the time between all the rest of the stuff that happens here.

Last weeks showed some fishing info. But many of them are just what is caught, with what and when and those are usually when I am too busy to get all the notes from people.

I post them at FishingMinnesota.com, WalleyeCentral.com, bdubnews.com, and several others.

July 4, 2005 Fishing Report

The Ely area has seen some major storms lately. The Ely softball field was ripped up a bit in one storm, trees were uprooted in another. Late night lightning displays have been frequent. Wind kept many anglers off the lakes.

The rain hasnt helped the fishermen, but it we are expecting a banner crop of wild blueberries this season. The mosquitoes we have as a result of this rain wont make berry picking any easier.

But those who braved it out or happened to be out during a calm time found they caught some dang nice fish.

The current bait of preference is leeches. Fish biting on minnows is decreasing. Nightcrawler hits are just now starting to work a little in the evenings.

The walleyes are shallow right now, any where between 10 and 15 feet deep. In the lakes that are murky, try using a yellow Lindy rig type of set up, no floats and do some slow trolling.

Smallies are snapping at leeches & jigs, chartreuse and pink. Also some top water Rapalas like the floating jointed and the Husky Jerks in white-silver are doing well. Cast the shoreline with some of the floating frogs and mice lures.

Northern pike are gulping down buzz baits, big spoons and just about anything large thrown in front of their faces.

Fish Caught Lately 

A 40 inch, 20 pound northern pike was caught in Farm Lake by Harlan Samuels of Warsaw, MO. He used a spinner and some 6 pound test line, no leader! Even though he was using such light equipment, he still managed to bring the creature in.

Connie Miller of Embarrass was on Eagles Nest and came back with a 16 pound 4 oz pike. Eagles Nest also delivered another pike, 7 pounds 12 oz that hit on a Rapala for Robert Miller of Strasberg, OH.

A Lindy rig and a leech was just the thing a 9 pound walleye from Moose Lake was interested in. Don Rehbein of Rochester MN brought that one in to be weighed.

Bear Island Lake produced a nice walleye for Carol Singleton of Crystal, MN. Her walleye weighed in at 6 pounds 12 ounces.

And to prove that nightcrawlers are starting to work, Rodger Shackelton of Minneapolis caught a 3 pound, 21 inch walleye.

A nice 19 inch smallmouth bass from Basswood Lake was caught on a leech by Crystal Peterson of Hayfield, MN.

Lots of nice fish have been caught and released too. A 26 inch walleye from White Iron was released by Roger Summers of Ely. He caught his on a leech and a jig.

In the smallmouth division, a 20 ¼ inch bronze beauty hit a Rapala thrown out in White Iron by John Ingram of Ely. Another 19 ¼ inch smallie was caught and released back into Upper Pauness Lake by Howard Holz of Grand Junction, IA.

The rest of this week looks to be sunny and cooler during the early week and sunny and around 80 degrees the last of the week. Well, at least there are no storms predicted, so maybe, just maybe, next weeks fishing report will have a lot more to share.

When the going gets tough, the tough go fishing!
