I searched these and got a lot of info, but recon is kind of my thing. Two trips this summer: 1. Ensign area via Moose and 2. Fourtown area via Mudro restricted which means no camping on Horse. Mid-summer for both.
Any advice beyond the usual?

Fourtown is a very good fishing lake and a beautiful one at that. daytrip into Horse if your after walleyes. Horse is my second favorite lake in all of the BWCA.

Fourtown and Horse are very populated but good fishing. If you want to get away from everyone, head up to Crooked!

BP-
How's the smallie fishing around there? Is Horse a stained water firetiger shad rap type of lake, or more of a clear water lindy rig deal?

Is the Horse/Fourtown area still heavily populated in early September?

quote halvorsonchristopher: "Is the Horse/Fourtown area still heavily populated in early September?"

I know some locals who really like the south end of Fourtown in the fall. The usual slowdown in tourist traffic would seem assured, however.
