Hello, just a pure shot in the dark. Were heading to Lake Independence in the U.P. in Marquette County a mile or so from Lake Superior and I wondered if anyone knows about this lake. I dont know the guy my dad and I are going with so getting info has been hard. Just wondering if anyone has fished it and would have any pointers. 30 feet deep max but supposed to be good for Walleye and Sm Bass, plus some Crappie and Perch I guess.

Again, just a shot in the dark but thought I would shoot away. You never know.
thanks for your time

I grew up a few miles NW of there, although to be honest, I was a lot more focused on fishing Lake Superior, its tributaries, and some 'forbidden lakes' directly west of Big Bay. Lake independence is certainly a good fishery, but there is also a lot of good trout/salmon opportunities nearby as well.

Lake Independence was initially a series of ponds, fed by the Yellow Dog River (and a few other creeks), and drained by the Iron River into Lake Superior. There is a dam on the Iron River, and thus Lake Independence was formed. I believe the state record perch was caught in this lake many years ago.

Mackenzie Bay is known to hold some large northerns. The areas near both the outlet and inlets hold walleye during certain times of the year, although you may be better hitting the deep spots in Sept. The entire middle of the lake ranges in depth from 25-30 ft. It is primarily a sandy lake, so don't be afraid to fish bottom.

The outlet river should be holding some salmon this time of year. The Yellow Dog is a productive trout fishery, and should not be over-looked if you get a chance to fish it. If you can get directions to 'black rock' you will find a good place to shore fish Lake Superior, where you can occasionally pull up a coaster or whitefish.

user0317, might you be referring to Mountain Lake in the Huron Mountain Club holdings? If so, how did you gain access? I have dreamed about visiting that lake, thinking winter would be a good time to snowshoe in.

Don't know about the fishing in the lake. The town park has some good campsites, and I agree about the trout fishing on the Yelllow Dog.
