I would think with school back in you would not hit a lot of traffic. My group went into the BW in mid June and the lakes were packed.
We entered at Seagull Outfitters (up the Gunflint) and paddled into Ogish and beyond. The lakes were totally full as others were telling us they could not find sites.
Maybe we need to go further in to get away from others. What did you run into??

If we dindn't get there when we did we would have had a harder time we had people come up 1/2 behind checking shorline for sites this was the weekend of 15th to 19th. And it is a lot of work up the moose river shallow water beaver dams and some what long portages. we satyed on agnes but did a day trip to lac la criox wow what a butifull lake . worth the visit. I was thinking of doing a trip closer to grand maria any good fishing anyone heard of that weekend we go we have aqlways run into days up to 75 80 degrees and fishing is never good. Three years in a row hudson, lake four and know agnes and lac la croix week fishing fun and enough to have fish dinner but not great.

With hunting for bear and grouse and late season fishing mid-September will always be busy within 3 lakes of any EP. With Agnes being so close it was to be expected the lake would be crowded.
If you want solitude you just need to travel a bit further from any EP. We went in Mudro last Tuesday (9/13) and came to a full and almost overflowing Fourtown lake before 2:00 the first day. We came back to Fourtown on the 17th to the same conditions. As we progressed on our trip past Fourtown we saw the following conditions:
Next Lake after Fourtown is Boot-fairly full but had sites available.
After Boot next lake is Fairy-1 of 2 sites occupied
After Fairy next lake is Gun-we had the whole lake to ourself so we stayed here for a night.
As we travelled further into Wagosh we again so only one group go through in the day an a half we were there.
On the way back to Mudro from Wagosh we observed the following:
Gun-1 site occupied as we went through
Fairy-we were the only ones on the lake at 1 of the 2 campsites unitl late in the day when someone came in and occupied the other one
Boot-almost completely full at 10:00 am with only one site looking like the group was leaving
Fourtown-one site available at the south end at 10:30 am. The lake was essentially full at 10:30 on Saturday morning with numerous people coming through looking for sites. We could tell most were base camp fishing or base camp hunting. We were one of the few just passing through.
Next Fall head over past Oyster up to Gebe or Rocky and I'll bet it will be a lot quieter.

My brothers and myself were just up on Ima, and after we got a couple of portages in we saw only a couple of people. My one brother did bring in a shotgun for grouse, but after we went hiking and bush wacking he knew he'd most likely not find anything he shot. We did see a few grouse, but were in too thick of cover to even think of shooting.

We didn't do very much fishing, mainly looking for wildlife and a get away.
I thought all the portages were okay, maybe a little rocky, but then again it's northern Minnesota. All the portages are fairly short, the longest we did was the 140 from Snowbank to Disappointment, and that I thought had the greatest elevation change. Being new to the BWCA that's about all I can say.
We did talk to a number of people who caught fish on Disappointment, and one group that caught a few on Hatchet.

We've been fishing Meeds Lake the last 4 weekends, entry through lizz #47. The Walleye fishing has been fantastic all 4 weekends, even when the temp was in the 80's. Leeches, Crawlers in 25 ft. ...Good Luck

I have been to Hudson from Lake One, done the loop from Lake One to Snowbank twice forward and backward, gone to Thomas for a week and daytripped in the area so I know a little about some of the fishing and sites to see in that general location. I have some pictures on this site of some fish from Disappointment and some of the cool sites from the area. If you have any specific questions I would be glad to answer any I can...
