Can't sit on the sidelines any longer without giving the Lake Trout some love! For me, they are a symbol of the wilderness that I love so much. As a young fisherman, I could catch pretty much any of the common Minnesota fish species within 20 minutes of my house, but not a Lake Trout. My first experience with Lake Trout happened when I was 10 years old and only after my Dad and I drove 5 hours to a place far far away from the city with no people (almost), lots of pine trees, wildlife, cool clean water and just me and him. To have quality time together in a beautiful place catching trout. Whenever I catch one it brings all of those things to mind, and my heart still skips a beat when I get that first glimpse of the fish on my line and discover it's a laker!
Is it proper that the wilderness and its creatures should suffer because we came? RP

I agree with the Laker deal. They were (still?) the most elusive species for myself to catch-- I guess it's just targeting them and being and eye' guy-- this one is from Ima in June 10'--
my good buddy and trip mate with a nice shore caught Laker from Thomas-
and the best of the Northwoods is not complete until a laker foil dinner!!!

The two loudest sounds known to man: a gun that goes bang when it is supposed to go click and a gun that goes click when it is supposed to go bang.

I think this is my favorite BW fish, though Pike deserve some credit too... A big part of it for me is not just that they are tasty and big but that I can easily target everything else much closer to home without a problem. Lakers though, in the open water season the BW is about the closest place to find them, that makes them extra special.
I still haven't caught a big Laker but I've caught many 20"-27" Lakers in canoe country. Some time I'm going to start putting in a serious effort to land a 35"+

I don't fish the BW but fish lake trout a lot in central Ontario and find this forum very informative and can relate to everyone because your waters and experiences are the same as mine .
I love the lake trout for there fight and determination to just stay deep as well like others have said they are a true icon of the north woods !
