If the Ice is out say 2-3 weeks early this year as some are predicting. How will that effect fishing in early August?? Thanks, Rick

I can't imagine it will have much effect at all.

All I know is that the late ice of 2013 ruined our Memorial Day trip. I hope it is early rather than late!

Now that I can see, we were the first ones in EP47 that year and it was slow, post spawn period was in full effect. But the OPs time is right in the middle of summer, it would take some prolonged record breaking weather to get fish thinking there is a period change and that will have no direct connection to the ice out.

Usually right after ice out walleye fishing is slow. Two weeks after is usually much better.

Late ice can definitely affect walleye fishing. I bet the trout were red hot tho.

You know I do a lot of lake trout fishing and that can be true very much and it does happen. But sometimes the day after ice out the fish are so scattered. But overall my best trout fishing is when the water warms up a few degrees and maybe insects get active and maybe trout get use to a ice free conditions.

The walleye thing you can look over the years and around Ely on a late ice out fishing is usually real slow with a few males caught. Like Mille lacs and maybe elsewhere,if I would pick one weekend for walleyes it would be about 2 weeks after the regular opener.
Otherwise like two weeks after walleyes get done spawning. Yes if your lucky you might catch the walleyes concentrated by river inlets and outlets earlier.

I was hoping to catch the last day or two in March to fish open water before trout season closes around home, but it doesn't look like it now. Might be close, but not close enough.

Corollary to this might be what will water levels be at that time given predicted drought levels. Last year was high water all the time both Q and BW. This year might be the opposite. Just a thought.

Was just up to Moose Lake on Saturday. Folks up that way said they had been losing ice up until this latest wave of cold. Now they are building it back up a bit...
