Hey there all,
Taking my kid and another Father Son out and the boys want to try to catch Trout as they never have... So, I am leaning on the BWCA clan for some help on this.

I was going to buy some of the Berkly Trout Cheese or something like that for trout, maybe some worms too. But need the advice of some that have tried. Can anyone help a brother out for this and maybe offer me some advice? Wondering this mainly. Where are they around this time of year? - Deeper water I am guessing What are some bait and lure ideas?

Thanks everyone in advance. My son is 8 and the other young chap just turned 12 and its the 12 yr old's first trip. 3rd for my boy. I want to hopefully make catching a beautiful Brookie part of their memories from the trip.

I don't think brookies are stocked in Lizz anymore.

just did a quick look on the DNR lakefinder, after the 2013 survey and one trout was netted with a few pike there going to discontinue the stocking of brook trout. so it doesnt look like this would be a good lake to target for brook trout.

We have had decent luck with shad raps in the uv colors. Compared to some others here my brook trout knowledge is pretty limited. I've only fished for them in the BW and if there's one consistency it's that the brookies are completely random. Light line and being quiet are two big factors. Other than that try lots of lures / patterns and depths until you contact a fish or two. I know it's probably not the info your looking for but BW brook trout are one tough customer.

could not agree more with the light line, my fav is #6 magnathin , has the diameter of #4 and is crystal clear.

May I suggest a trip into pierz lake for splake. They are fun to catch and you can camp right there or next door on alder. We have got some nice trout in pierz over the years and alder has fish too! Good luck and have fun teaching the youngsters about the bdub! That's what it's all about! Marc

I have done a lot of Brookie fishing in the NE and Canada but none in BWCA. I have had great luck with Mepps Black Fury spinners in rivers and lakes. Daredevles are also good for trolling. What I would NOT do is anything that reminds them of their food in the hatchery since they have most likely acclimated to natural food. If the water is cool, they do well on flies like a Wooly Bugger or just match the hatch.

Well thank you everyone! I appreciate the time and info... however, what a bummer to hear they stopped the stocking... It is what it is though. We are walleye men by heart anyhow. LOL

Side note - Pierz and Canoe and that whole area - probably one of my personal favorite places... but I had a trip there where those Western winds made a scary time for me on E. Bearskin and a couple of other kids (nephews) on the way out and it was all i could do to get us out of there... I sure the hell am not doing that again with my 8 year old in the bow. With any of my regular group though, you bet!

Thanks Everyone!

I have had luck with a #5 original floating Rapala in Brook Trout pattern, little Cleo and #3 Mepps spinners in yellow. I have not fished Liz but I'm hitting two more brook trout lakes this fall.

What's a Brook Trout, and how would a person go about catching one of those. Anyone have any pictures so I know what one looks like if I catch one :-)

Back in the 80's and 90's when the Austin's had Rockwood they had a boat on Lizz. You would carry a motor over and troll the lake for trout. In May I was talking with Mike the current owner of Rockwood about that era. He told me that since Northern's were introduce the trout are almost non existent. I wish you could have fished it when it was a trout only lake.
