I'm a walleye/northern/bass fisherman who may find myself on a trout lake for a solo trip in September. Can anyone give me some tips? Are trout (Rainbow and Lakers) active in Fall? Any tips on how to fish them? Finally, if I keep one to eat, will my usual Shorelunch batter be OK.
By the way, I hope to be on Ram Lake...40 ft. max depth.

Thanks!

September lakers can be hit or miss... some trips we do well, but not as consistent as the spring. I've only fished stream trout around the BWCA twice in September, once for rainbows. We did well for the rainbows using the same stuff I'd use for them in streams. ( small mepps, raps, panther martins, cleos, etc) We saw another group using crawlers & they did well. Most were caught less than 10 feet down & evenings were best. Good luck.

I'm going to Ram next week and have been there before. As for catching them, I would use a little cleo, blue/silver . red/gold / or green sliver. Spoons. I would start shallow and move deep. Ram is one of the most beautiful lakes I have ever seen. To answer the 2nd question you have , butter/crisco and any spice you like will do fine. They have great red fillets, taste great just by themselves.

I agree, you will have to go deep to catch the lakers in Sept. Silver\chrome spoons or white jigs that weigh about an oz., try hair or tube jigs over deep humps.

I wouldn't put breading on a trout. Try a little butter, lemon juice and a little lemon pepper spice and you will be fine.
