I'm bringing -

1) Jigs & plastics
2) Minnow type cranks
3) Lipless cranks

I'm really hoping to find some shallow walleyes since they are easier to catch. I don't really feel like bringing live bait.

October can be good topwater fishing, so bring buzzbaits, frogs, poppers and spooks. I wish I had brought my buzzbaits last week (Sept).

I'm heading out on the 28th for a week. That means I catch the last few days of trout season. My kit will include flutter spoons for trout, flutter and casting spoons for pike and a couple of new, for me, crayfish baits for smallmouth (I'll also take jigs and twister tails and a small assortment of jerk baits.) Both of these crayfisg baits look really interesting and I'm dying to try them out. The first is Larry Dahlberg's Clackin' Crayfish. This is an amazing looking bait that, according to the videos I've seen, imitates an actual crayfish in every detail. Well, I've heard that before but it sure looks promising in hand. Clackin Crayfish
The second is Savage Gear's 3D Crayfish. This one is very cool and can be fished in a number of ways, either jigged or weedless. 3D Crayfish
I don't get to fish for bass that much so I'm pretty excited about trying these critter baits out.

For me trout season in the fall is Brookies Rainbows and Browns and they are fair game until October 31st.

Are night crawlers worth taking at this time of year?

for brookies a must. phelps floater/little air slip sinker off shore. great way to fish while at camp :) (lower left in my tackle box) (keep your bail open put a little rock on your line/piece of tin foil at the rod tip and watch while you cook or do camp chores or enjoy the view) crawlers are always a good thing to bring into the BW. keep in the shade/cool always a good slip bobber set up. it isnt like theres a bunch of sunnies trying to steal it in the BW ;)

I like this approach!

The bulk of the walleyes will be deeper during the day(30-40')with a shallow migration at night. Of course any current or light changing event (wind, clouds) could bring them shallow for periods during the day. Because of their preference for deeper and steeper structure at this time of year, vertical presentations usually work better.

How do you fish them? I never realized Lakers were the only ones that shut down Sept 30.

Spinners, small spoons and rapalas are pretty much what I use at that time.

Bass pro......Have you tried the Ugly Duckling lures? Balsa.....last December a guy I met on another forum and I went Trout fishing on a stream in Tennessee. Morning started out in the mid thirties but it was sunny and we decided to fish anyway even though we both knew that catching fish was going to be slim. We put 3 20" rainbows on the bank along with the usual 12 inchers. Stocked fish and the twenty inch fish were obviously layovers. 2 of the bigger trout were caught on Ugly Ducklings (The other was caught on a plastic hellgramite and jig head)........It was the first time the guy had ever caught a twenty on this stream. His pic sits in my office.......good guy, great day.

I like small crank baits in moving water for bigger trout. The original rapala in the brown trout finish was absolutely killer for me on rivers in Yellowstone and Glacier. The Ugly Ducklings in brighter patterns seemed to be the ticket for the rainbows.

In lakes and still water the cranks fade IMO quite dramatically and I rarely catch anything with them in lakes. Enter in spoons........My new favorite is a 3/16 oz daredevil in gold or even better was the brown trout pattern. The 3/16 oz size is hard to find at retailers which usually carry 1/8 and then move to 1/4..........one is to small and one is to big. You can order the 3/16 from Cabelas. Be sure to add a little snap.
