I didn't make it up north last summer. However, in the summer of 2014 we came across some small mouth that had black dots in the fillets about an eighth of inch big. They were perfect circles. Has anyone else experienced these? What about 2015? I think I read that they are not harmful to humans. Does anyone know for sure?

I have seen these in sunfish before. I think it travels from a snail to bird then to the fish. As I remember if you cook them fully they are harmless. I do not care to eat them.

Yeah, the spots are harmless after the fish is cooked. If you would rather not think about what you are eating, do not read the link below:

It is very rare if a fish does not have parasites. The black spot is pigment from the fish and underneath is the larvae stage of neacus which will be yellow. Smallmouth bass get it real good at times.

It would be very rare if the FISHERMAN did not have parasites. All plants and animals have parasites. The specific one mentioned here is a trematode/fluke.
I have been grossed out, to the point of leaving the animal, only twice in my life. In one case, it was a cottontail rabbit that seemed to turn black as I walked up to it. The dark color was the result of millions of fleas coming out of the fur. Tularemia was in the news back then and I just walked away.
The other was a large mouth bass that had long nematodes waving from nearly every organ of its body and cysts of various types on both the exterior and interior aspects of its flesh.
In hindsight, the fear associated with that rabbit was legit. With the bass, it was just a matter of being grossed out.
