Pulling my stuff together for my trip.......focusing on trophy fish and thought I would pass this swimbait on. These are just so impressive on many levels.

First off I like the size.......nice big sort of lure but not huge or bulky. But heres the rub, a nice thin but strong hook with a decent gap. What that does for the average angler is you don't have to have a broomstick in order to set the hook. You will need a rod with a bit of backbone however to cast the lure......at 6" it does weigh a bit. (1.25 oz)

Lots of versatility with this lure.......troll or cast, shallow or deep. It will catch all of canoe countries big 4. Not my first choice for smallies but I have little doubt they would eat it. Primarily a pike and walleye lure but I will be very interested to see what a laker would do if you jigged this on their nose.

Anyways......these are not commonly available and you really have to see them to fully appreciate what a fine lure they are.

FWIW.......I will likely fish this on 20lb braid (suffix 832) with a 20lb floro leader.......after my first bite off (LOL) I will add a length of 16lb Knot2Kinky titanium leader.

I love fishing paddletails. I read the info on the lure and instantly thought when drifting for lakers on Ryod or Kilburn on WCPP the bait would be ideal! I like the weight and size and think it would be a nice bait for pike as well.

I would likely go with the gold color for WCPP.

Bob.

Solobob.......

Keep a lookout if you are in WCPP in August........a black carbon fiber solo with a Loomis fish decal in front and a red Quiet Journey decal in back. I will likely be drifting across the lake muttering unmentionables while trying to get a tangle out.

Gold is hard to beat in northern climes.........but I can't help but wonder. Ciscos aren't golden and neither are small trout or whitefish. So even though I am biased to gold my brain tells me to bring the other colors as well. So I have a pack of each.

These baits are interesting and like most swimbaits the better ones not only have a tail motion the entire body will have a gentle side to side rocking motion as well. This rocking motion is vitally important IMO. To get the most out of the rocking motion I suggest a loop knot. My favorite loop knot for fluorocarbon is the perfection loop which BTW works wonderfully well with Fluorocarbon. As with all loop knots you will sacrifice some line strength so go a little heavier with the line than you ordinarily would.

Another option if you prefer not to use a loop knot is a fas-snap. These tiny clips are absolutely wonderful connections. Extremely discreet (nothing in the way of clips is more discreet) and yet plenty strong for most freshwater applications. I would use the large size fas-snap or possibly the x-large......I can't remember now but they are fairly beefy which is what you would want with the bigger hook wire that these swim baits have.

I am secretly hopeful of putting this in front of a nice big fat walleye.....something over 10 would be nice. Certainly the lure is big enough to get their attention.

These baits also do some weird things on the drop.....and seldom drop straight, pretty cool. Let it drop and give it a hard twitch and it darts to the side. Sweet!

I think you will be happy with the response you get "up north" fishing swimbaits. The last several years I have brought them in, and learned plenty. First, my rig is a simple set-up of a stiff rod, level wind reel, and braid. I pour my own shad head jigs...1/2, 3/4, 1 oz. heads, and I use 4,5,6 in. swim bodies. Mix up weight and size for the current desires of the fish. I do use the biggest hooks I can get in my mold...5/0, 6/0, 7/0. You want a big fish, be prepared.

Current fav for brand is Big Hammer. They have a big floppy paddle tail...that sucker moves at the slowest speed!

I think you will be surprised at the size of fish you catch. 2 yrs. ago I caught a 18in. Walleye with an 8in. Walleye sticking out of his gullet(part of the tail sticking out of the mouth!). Caught it on a 5in. swimbait. So much for delicate feeders! Good luck in WCPP.

Once AGAIN thanks for sharing great insight and knowledge. Now if I can just combine all of your recent fishing secrets/tips. To recap, I need to use Sea Strike Planers + Speed Troll at wake speed + use 1.25 oz Savage Gear swim baits.

Oh man, I can hear the drag screaming on my Garcia Revo (another recent insider tip) spinning reel now. Of course this setup is sure to bag every 10# plus walleye in the lake. Thanks again. You Da Man!

Sounds like you got it going on bassnet. My set up is similar......I think the Revo will be ideal for tossing these around. First time on the shield with an emphasis on swimbaits.......good to hear I might be on the right track.

I'm with you concerning larger baits........that has been my experience in canoe country. They like it big.

Perfect! Can't wait to use the planers while paddling at max trolling speed; is the BW a 'wake free' zone?

By George I believe I am being mocked? Its the price you pay for putting yourself out there. Tsk, tsk.

Yes instead of talking about planers, high speed trolling and state of the art swimbaits lets talk about empty peanut butter containers.......Now there's an idea worthy of consideration!

Gosh, Sorry didn't mean to offend. Oh, wait a minute, I know why your upset. My Bad. I forgot one of the innumerous recent fishing tips (geez they all run together after awhile sorry). I WILL add a large bait minnow with surgically removed skeleton as a dropper off the Savage Swimbait. I got it now. Slow learner sorry. This IS gonna be our best year ever. Thanks again MT! Lets Go.

I have 2 peanut butter jars with crank baits that I am taking on my trip in 3 weeks. I learned that simple trick on this forum, never would have tried that. I tried to remove the cranks and it was easier than I thought, so thanks for the tip.
Sorry MT, but when you 'put yourself out there' so frequently, sometimes it is the price you pay. I know I'm going to get slammed for that statement, but I enjoy learning about fishing tips for the BW/Q. It just seems like every fishing thread has 10 paragraphs of your synopsis on the subject, and it's easy to lose interest.

I suppose you guys are right.......I do post a bit to often don't I? I just like talking fishing is all. Working 12 hours a day 7 days a week for months on end without a day off, no fishing, no nuthin but work and more work (Do I hear violins;-).......so this is a bit of an escape for me. Get out of the shop, take a coffee break, jump on the forum.......well you get the idea. I'll give you a break for a while....watch ESPN instead...sorry, my bad.

You don't need to read his posts if you don't like them....

I can't possibly be the only one who enjoys reading extensive posts about fishing in a fishing forum.

Please keep them coming MT.

Hey thanks for getting my back guys........

I'll be back around but good decorum dictates leaving room for others and in that I have been in error.

But I can't wait to tell you about the Hogy Lure innovations I came up with last night while tinkering........I used their tin head but added........oh crap, there I go again! I'll tell you about it later.......;-)

Lets not bicker and argue.......

MT,

Your YouTube attachments were "priceless". "You da Man" and Monty Python's "Who Killed Who" ... LOL.

I am an avid follower of the Fishing Forum" ... heck I read it every day! Keep posting as I can't get enough information about fishing.

I have picked up so many fishing tips on this forum that have helped me catch "more" and "bigger" fish in Quetico.

When I went to the Q 37 years ago, I just brought a few jigs and a few rapalas and shad raps. I was content. Now my fishing pack is stuffed with a wide assortment of fishing gear for my 10 day trips. I have learned about so many new and varied tactics to catch walleyes, small mouth and Lake trout that now necessitates taking lots more equipment. Necessary? ... maybe not ... but I have to say my catch rate and size has gone up for sure over the years.

Thanks to all who post on this forum and share their expertise.

Thanks Mike

Hey why don't you take a month off and go with me to WCPP. Or better yet retire early? I need someone to help portage in some of this fishing stuff ;-)

04/29/2016 05:07PM

MT,

Can't wait for the day when I retire and can take a 3 or 4 week trip to WCPP or Quetico. Unfortunately its looking like 4 more years ... October 2020 ... can't get here soon enough.

I need a "Sherpa" as well to help with my portage loads. I have been trying to get my son in law, who is a former linebacker for the Colts to come along and portage my heavy packs but he only wants to go on a boat fishing trip and sleep in a cabin and drink beer. What the heck!

I thought I would be travelling lighter as I get older but my fishing pack keeps getting bigger and heavier and I have started to take some luxury items that I never took along in my early years ... Helionix Chair, 10 x 12 mosquito awning attached under my CCS tarp, an extra few litres of Scotch and Bourbon, a Nemo Filo Pillow, a Gerber Axe to name a few.

I can't wait to get "Up North" and do some paddlin' and fishin'.

Did you check out Solobob's profile pic? He looks huge. Maybe we can get him to carry our stuff. We can be independent together.

Biggest fish of the day washes dinner dishes.
