I genrally use 6 lb mono for jigging and power pro braid for casting spinners and crankbaits. Is there any reason to use something dofferent for lake trout? I may give them a try the end of june but i dont know much about them. I have caught a few and read alot but have more reading to do

Mono is great for a lot of things but for fishing lakers in the summer I'd suggest something that sinks better and has less stretch.

So does braided line sink better? Or do i need something else?
The only lakers i have caught were while i was walleye fishing, i later found out that the lake i was on does not have walleyes. You may ask what that has to do with the discussion on line, nothing, i am just illustrating how much of a fishing dummy i am. Haha

Braided floats, Floro would be a good sinking line but if you are trying to get deep, your best bet would be an inline sinker or a 3/4 -1oz jig

Braid has significantly less projected area due to the thinner diameter. This results in the line creating less lift when trolling, allowing you to get baits deeper compared to mono and flouro.

I have no idea when the lower lift is offset by the buoyancy of the line. Braid is pretty neutrally buoyant, so my guess would be not at normal trolling line lengths.

Lots of folks laugh and roll their eyes when I talk about physics and fishing but here is a prime example. What he is saying John, is the larger diameter the line, the fatter, the more resistance it has going through the water. This resistance impedes and creates pressure on the line driving it upward .

I have a pal who jigged in the crystal clear waters of Sylvania for lakers using 6lb XT trilene (which probably tests out to regular 8lb mono) with some success but it took him forever to land fish.

I have used 8lb mono........again trilene XT but in 8 lb and had good success.

Braid will allow you to fish deeper. But I have never used braid for lakers........I can't help but wonder if guys add a length of floro leader? Or do they fish straight braid? Straight braid is an idea I have a hard time adjusting my thinking to.........but floro leaders adds complexity......more knots=more chances for mistakes.

8lb green trilene XT is tried and proven...........6 is to light IMO. Having said that my Laker set up for this summer is braid in 20 and 65 tests depending on lure and application.

We used 10# Suffix braid tied to 8" titanium leaders on Oyster last year when trolling taildancers and deep husky jerks in June. We caught 11 or 12 and lost several. They were >25' deep and we put a bobber stop at 140' as a way of telling how much line we had out and trolled at 1.8 to 2 mph.

One of my favorite laker lines is, 'Here laker, laker, laker, ...' Works most days.

I use 8 lb PowerPro and 3 feet of 15 lb fluorocarbon for a leader. We catch plenty of Lakers. The fine diameter of the PowerPro makes it slide through the water like butter.

I'm going up this year with braid and a flouro leader, we'll see how it works.

Last year I used straight flouro but had terrible time with it on my baitcaster(much of it probably my fault) so I switched it up.

I've always used braid to swivel to floro. I've had good success with that.

Just to add to my comment above... I have gotten to where I only use Uni knots because they are simple and strong. That is on the braid to fluoro and to the lure/swivel (if using). If the line is very thin, just a few extra wraps is good. Again an addition for MT... I live in Florida and enjoy skinny water fishing for Snook and Reds. Both of these fight hard and get large. I've had zero knots pull with the Uni to Uni, braid to Flouro connection.

Trilene xl 8 pound line. The only time I switch from this is if im deep water jigging, then its fireline to a swivel then a leader of trilene xl 8 pound.

If I were you I would jig for lakers with my powerpro rod. Add a flouro leader. I'm with mapsguy, uni knots will hold wonderfully. I once horsed a redfish with that set-up and I'm sold.

20# green suffix 832 or PowerPro. often even with a 25# Knot to Kinky Leader. This is strictly trolling crank baits as i have never jigged for LT. MT:"Straight braid is an idea I have a hard time adjusting my thinking to..." MT, give it a try. Really side by side we have not noticed a difference in size or numbers btwn 20# braid, 6# or 8# trilene xl. This seems odd compared with what i read here. Perhaps it's just that much easier when we're there in June, or ignorance is bliss.
