In general regards to fishing right now, specifically walleye and the current conditions being behind a few weeks, at what depth and how has everyone been doing? Doesn't have to be BW only, just curious. Heading up for first BWCA trip of the year next week, and trying to get some ideas of what depth to start at. I'm thinking 8-15 feet, just a jigs with gulp grubs, or live leeches. Any reports or suggestions? How about Northern and smallies?

TG,
This time of year, (or rather in years past this time of year) I would suggest exactly what your subject says... fish the current, or rather deep hole below rapids or in current where, walleyes, smallies and some darn big northerns lie in wait for a meal to drift overhead... Other than that I fish topwater and gitzits for smallies in water from shore to about 10 ft, and around any structure in the water! Walleyes have in the past been around 10 - 12 ft during this time, drifting a floating jighead with a leech attached or a lindy rig with a float to keep the hook and leech up off the bottom... I do not use spinners (just me!!) Northern spoons, spinners anything bright or firetiger. This year I bought some big (4-5 inches long) Cabela's walleye divers in various awful colors to troll deeply across lakes in hope of the large walleye bite or the even larger northern bite... and at $1.99 each it will be okay if I lose one or two! My tackle box almost looks like Kanoes... just teasing Jan!!
