Putting in at Mudro on sept 25th. Very experienced with largemouth in Missouri, but new to pike and walleye. What lures should I bring? Any tips will be a huge help. Just looking for my wife and I to catch some fish. Not searching for trophies on first trip! Thanks

Most of your LMB tackle will work for SMB. Use anything shiny for pike, spinners, buzzbaits, spoons, the bigger the bait the bigger the fish, but honestly they'll hit anything in front of them so make sure to have a good leader. Curly tail jigs, crankbaits, mepps, spinner rigs, swim baits, all work for walleyes. Trolling deep diving crank baits, spoons if you can get them deep, and jigs for lake trout. Can't comment on dead/live bait.

This is a transition period for most of these fish so finding them can be harder, there's a lot of good searchable information on here about that.

Send an email to - queticomike@yahoo.com - request the " Grand Slam Lure " article. This will give you some of the basics for the fish you are after. Good luck on your trip!

Stiff, we are also going in Mudro on the 25th. I'll be in a red Ford Explorer with Nebraska plates. See you there.

Just came out of Horse and the bite was hit and miss. Real soft and you have to be real patient.
The fish seemed to react opposite to conditions, i.e. Caught walleye on clear sunny day with no chop whatsoever. Caught nothing in perfect "walleye weather". Lol

Succes was between 16-26 feet of water on light colored grubs on a white 1/4 oz jig head or minnows. They were not really sucked up anywhere. Hopefully that changes for you.

Mistakes from southern bass guys fishing the shield are common. I have always remembered a guy and his kid who were at the same fish camp as my partner and I on Lake Minnitaki. He complained bitterly about lack of success and even though my pal and I were hammering the big walleye he would not take any advice and consequently left early. I felt sorry for the kid. They were throwing spinnerbaits against the shoreline.

Do not pound the shoreline except during spring. Do not use heavy or otherwise highly visible line.

Depth finders are helpful. You are looking for rubble bottom, not smooth. If you lack a depth finder look to the shore for clues. Smooth rock often means the same under your boat. Rubble shores likewise. Avoid the steeply dropping facing.

My strategy without a depth finder would be to concentrate on points, islands and saddles. A jig with a Kalins curly tail fished within 2 ft of the bottom will take fish.

I am also a big fan of Chatterbaits fished with the same kalins trailer. Cast parallel to the point, let sink to the bottom and hop it along in spurts letting it fall back down. Gold blades are best.

If money is no object I strongly suggest obtaining some Mega bass deep six lures in sexy shad. Cast or troll in 15 to 20 ft.

There are some whopper pike to be had. Here your bait casting equipment can come in handy. Super Shad raps in perch should work just fine. Fish these in the same areas you catch some walleye.......the big pike should not be far behind.
