Not sure if this qualifies, but I just ordered 2 more REI Flex Lite chairs for our men's group. So now we will have four, two of each design, and we can make our own scientific research on the pros and cons of each. :-)

Silky saw here after tiring of having to lash the (too long to pack) Sven to the outside of a pack.

Got the wife an Arc 'Teryx pack for our non-paddling trips.

The Filo Camp Pillow bought from Piragis, along with a copy of "Hugh Glass" by Bruce Bradley (also from Piragis) to stir my mountain fantasies. A good nights sleep to look forward to and a little mental stimulation to keep the anticipation high during the cabin-fever season.

There's still lots of open water on the lake by my house. That's where I normally ski. So I figure my ski season is shot. So, I bought myself some big nasty studded tires for my mountain bike. They're awesome!

You'd think this warm weather and open water would mean we'd get an earlier ice out for paddling in spring. But, I suspect this effect isn't entirely reciprocal, and we still might need a warm spring for that :(

Stories from the Bow Seat: The Wisdom and Waggery of Canoe Tripping

Great book to just leave out and inspire me through winter. It's right next to my winter camping photobook, which inspires me through the summer.

Hey sunny- Are you going to go see the new Hugh Glass movie, too?

Here is a teaser from "Man In The Wilderness", loosely based on Hugh Glass. May want to watch that also.

Happy Holidays!

Absolutely, Boonie! The first night is the 8th and I will be there. My newest passion for off-the-water is muzzleloading and I now have 2 Hawken almost-replicas. I'm thinking of not bathing this winter just for effect!

12/30/2015 06:13PM
I'm hoping to go see it too, sunnybear. Oddly enough, my wife isn't interested.

And don't shave either! ;)

It's been a really long time since I watched Richard Harris in that one.

A friend of mine from Moab, Utah wrote this 15 or 20 years ago. He recited it from memory at our company holiday party this year after we egged him on, almost 20 minutes, drunk as a skunk. Gotta love a poet's brain! Hope you enjoy.

Nice job! It took me 10 minutes to just read it, cold sober! I tried to read "Lord Grizzly" by Manfred a couple of years ago, but it seemed overly fictionalized. The Bradley book is a much better read and captures all the highlights in a believable way. A fine winter book.

I got myself a new waterproof camera (Fujifilm XP80), a Gorilla Pod, two waterproof bags for electronics, and a light weight daypack (REI Flash 22) that I am going to use on my trip to Mexico in a few days. They will also be used in the BWCA this coming season.

I am saving up for a Warbonnet Super Fly tarp for my hammock. Going to buy that as my mother's day gift to myself :-)

12/31/2015 08:48PM
I got an Ostrom harness for my blue barrel and a gransfors hatchet.

I bought myself another Tarptent, this one big enough for two people so the wife and I can use it on our backpacking and BWCA/Quetico trips. It's amazing how light you can get the packs if you just spend a lot of money!! :)

Big score? The Frost River Pallisades pack!

A new seal a meal with the option to seal without a vacuum.

Wool socks and silk longjohns.

And best of all, a new brother-in-law that wants to take a Week on the BWCA! He is an avid car camper, but willing to learn wilderness ways (and to have a chance to bond with his new [adult] stepson). Add my son Yoder to the mix and it will be a great group.

Which ones did you have and which one did you get? Tell me about them.

Got myself some trekking poles and a wool buff. The buff's seen daily wear due to the recent cold snap. I can see its usefulness year round.

01/13/2016 01:48PM
Right on the wool buff use, mine even goes in with the sleeping bag for summer trips.

Got a new pair of Stegar Mukluks; my old pair finally bit the dust after 25 years of very rugged use. Also got me a Heater Body Suit for deer season. I should try them both out this weekend when the high in Ely is going to barely be above zero!

My son bought me the Nat'l Geog book about survival techniques. What a great gift! The book is chock full of interesting info about different eco-systems in which one may want to go camping, etc. It gives advice geared toward the specific situations you might encounter in different places, e.g. desert, northern forest, swamp, mountains.

My family gave me these little gems for Xmas. The carabiners are actually pretty substantial and I think the little pulleys might be fun to play around with. The little Gerber multi tool is small but might be interesting . Hiawatha
