I am sure there are as many recipes for this but I'm looking for a good basic starter recipe. Thanks

dehydrated applea, pineapple, honey dew melon, grapes, bananas, cantalope,m&m's,nuts, sunflower seeds,it is alot of work dehydrating the fruit but is well worth it,tastes better than the trail mix you buy at the store imo.

mixed nuts, papaya, apricots, raisins, chopped dates, m & m's, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds....other dried fruits as desired. Go to your local coop and have fun!

My go-to mix:
jar of dry roast peanuts
jar of dry roast sunflower seeds
jar of dry roast mixed nuts (cashews, almonds, filberts, pecans, etc.)
2-3 handfuls of raisins
1 pound bag of regular M&M's

Another good one (for the sweet tooth):
half-and-half mix of dry roast peanuts and spice gum drops

I've never made GORP the same way twice in a row. Here's the basic recipe that works for us -

Peanuts
Raisins
Dried Cranberries
M&Ms
Dehydrated Pineapple
Sesame bits

Use your imagination. I like craisin, peanuts, M & M's.

Peanuts & candy corn. It's just like a Payday or Pearson's Nut Roll.

One thing to remember is that all of the pieces should be roughly the same size. This way, none of it settles to the bottom of the bag to quickly.

Wal-Mart's trail mix is surprisingly good and cheaper than mixing your own. They offer several different mixes, but I stick to the basic one.

I've made a lot of GORP. Now my recipe is like Unas10's ..... I buy it at walmart. :)

My buddy Jim has a good recipe. It is: Take a large bag of M&Ms and to it add a large bag of M&Ms. Mix thoroughly to distribute the colors. :)

Walmart Mountain Mix is what we use. I took a bag of it separated out the MM's, Raisins, Cashews, Almonds and peanuts weighed each of them and then priced it out. Even buying the ingredients on sale with coupons it came out cheaper to just get it from Walmart.

We would have to echo Beemer01 on this. We make it a bit different each time, always experimenting and always like it no matter what we choose to include. Would say, you just need to start with the basics an let it happen.

Wal-mart fer sure, and they use real M&M's. I have tried a few others from wal-mart,can't remember which, but it was also very good.

I'll have to check the walmart mix.

I usually make my own mix and it is pricey.

MM's
yogurt raisins
chocolate raisins
honey roasted pnuts
delmonte dried fruits
craisins

I have bought individual packets in bulk from Costco. I use them for my SAR pack. Along with check mix trail bars from costco.

bdavid1157, Great Job! Thanks!

P.S. You don't happen to work for Wal-Mart? :)

03/10/2009 06:19AM
If the Wal-Mart mix is too basic just throw in some of your favorite delicacies. It would probably still be more economically responsible(i.e., cheaper).

I do not work for Walmart I just have to much time on my hands.
This was my breakdown. Each 28oz bag contained M and M 7.5oz. Rasins 7.5oz. Peanuts 8.5oz. Almonds 3.2oz. Cashews 1.8oz. total 28.5oz.

I thought maybe you ran a small GORP Store in the center of town, that closed up when Wal-Mart moved in. :)

I really like those seasme sticks and also those little garlic toast things. I don't mix them in GORP though. I bag em separately for snacks during Happy Hour.

I assemble mine from items mostly from Trade Joes

I probably use more dried fruit than most but here's a rough idea.

about 1 package each if I remember right-

Dried mixed berries (has blueberries and others I can't remember)
Dried Cranberries
Raisins
Multi colored raisins
1/2-the-salt peanuts
1/2-the-salt cashews
Lots of M&Ms - both regular and peanut butter

plus whatever other dried fruit looks good

Several people have said it's the best gorp they've had. I guess I should have paid more attention to the recipe, I just kind of make it to taste.

I use to buy all the stuff and make my own. Maybe I'll start with the Walmart mix and add a few things. Banana chips, dried cranberries, sunflower seeds, roasted soybeans, a few sesame sticks, and some hot spice sticks (hot Mexican flavor). I go to "That" section at Woodmans and just browse and buy what looks good. We go through ALOT of it. Lilcowdoc likes more dried fruit and sometimes we make 2 different varieties.

So, bdavid1157, What you are really saying is...If I want m&m's, raisins, almonds, cashews or peanuts,I should buy the walmart trail mix and separate them out?????

I'm with gutmon on this one.

I second the wal-mart recommendation. It is cheap and has the right combination of ingredients...

I buy dried apricots, blueberries, sunflower kernels at the "Dollar Tree" or at a bargain, then mix with almonds, and/or cashews and sometimes chocolate or yogurt raisins from cosco. Usually end up with too much after it's mixed, but.....'you'll have that'

I make my own with the following ingredients:

1. Planter's Deluxe Mixed Nuts. 1. large can
2. Planter's Spanish peanuts. 1. small can
3. Salted sunflower seeds. 2. 8 oz bags
4. Dried Banana chips 2. 12 oz bags
5. Dried Pineapple chips 2. 12 oz bags
6. Dried Mango 1. 12 oz bag
7. Peanut M&M's 1. 1 lb bag
8. Regular M&M's 1. 1 lb bag
9. Almond M&M's 1. 1 lb bag

That is enough for several people for a week! It is heavy but it always eaten completely up! Of course you can vary the recipe...

Costco is where I get mine. They have a large bag mixed. Or I have bought their dried fruits, nuts, etc. to make my own.

Raisins... M&M's... cashews.

I like when we take 2 (once we took 3) varieties. It's nice to be able to change it up from the norm. The first we take is the "classic": raisins, peanuts and M&M's plus sunflower seeds and other nuts. The second (my favorite) is macadamia nuts, pineapple, craisins, pistachios, coconut shreds, banana chips, and papaya. The 3rd is spicy savory mix with sesame sticks, spicy soy beans, seasoned nuts gardetto type chips etc. It seems like a lot, but is always gone! This seems to be a common phenomena on BW trips...

I try to take 3 varieties of trail mix.
1- breakfast mix of yogurt raisins, dried apples, pineapple, banana, cheerios, and peanuts.
2- spicy mix of rice crackers, cajun peanuts, sesame sticks, and red pepper pumpkin seeds.
3- snack mix of peanuts, m&m's, raisins, soy nuts, cashews.

I also make a primarily chocolate mix when I go with my girlfriends consisting of goobers, raisinettes, peanut m&m's, peanut butter m&m's, peanuts, regular and dark m&m's, and yogurt raisins.

I dont have a recipe, I just go to Trader Joes, pick up what I think will work and mix up it mix. I will also buy trail mix at Walmart and add to it. Gold Fish crackers work great especially the pretzel ones. Captain Crunch cereal is good for the breakfast mix. It just depends on what is on sale and what looks good.

http://www.midwestnorthernnut.com/ - This is a great place to get nuts. If you live in the twin cities you can stop buy and purchase directly from them. Good prices.

I take this recipe:

1 1-lb. bag of cashews
1 1-lb. bag of peanut M&M's
1 bag of dried pineapple
1 bag shelled sunflower seeds
1 large bag of Reese's Pieces

*evenly distribute items between two large Ziploc bags, seal, and shake vigorously*

I basically hit Fleet Farm and run through their dehydrated section and add the stuff I like. I tried Cranberries twice and have decided that I don't like them. I'm also certain that I left out another fruit and that it's never the same twice ...

I'll second Midwest Northern Nut, I used to deliver to them occasionally (courier work) and have one of their brochures with all of the gorp/trail mixes. They've got a lot of variety!

No recipe. We just buy a bunch of peanuts, M&Ms (regular, dark, and peanut), raisins, and then extras like dried raspberries, dried blueberries, fancy nuts such as macadamias, dried cranberries,.... hitting trader joes is a good source to look around at what looks good. Lots of good ingredients in this thread, too. Then just before the trip we have a GORP making party and each person mixes up a few ziplocs for themselves which are labeled with a Sharpie. Definitely fun and woe unto anyone who accidently grabs one of my wife's bags.
