After reading jenrobsdad's post on singles I'd like to know if anyone might volunteer their method for producing a homemade coffee filter bag? I'd really like to bring some good grounds up this year and we could bring either a press or percolator. Thanks!

I went with a group of six to Quetico one year. The trip leader prepackaged the coffee in his wife’s old panty hose. Yes, they were cleaned first and it worked out alright. The only downside was packing out the nylons after the fact. This only happened one trip because of the amount of ribbing a group of guys can dish out to the trip leader over 8 days and years to come.

I use one made of cheesecloth. Triple layer, fold up to create rectangle of "right" size, then the nice wife sewed up the two sides to create sleeve. Then put cord over top of sleeve, fold top of cheese cloth over string/cord, and have said wife sew up to make cord pocket around bag. Insert coffee, pull string to shut, throw in boiling water, remove from heat, stir around couple times, drink.

i saw a TV program a few years ago and a fishing guide made coffee for the shore lunch by having it sewn up in cloth bags.he said after all the ways they tried making coffee this worked out the best.i can see how a guide would want someway to make coffee with the least clean up problems..no loose grounds or pot to clean out.chuck the bag back at the lodge and rinse the pot.

You can buy empty tea bags at most grocery stores. I got mine at Byerlys. Just fill and tie the tops with some string.

I use the empty tea bags, just fold them over a couple times and staple them shut.

I have been wondering about this as well. Could you get a Melita filter which is kind of cone shaped, and staple the top shut after you put your coffee in? Or do you think the filter would disintegrate?

Thanks,

PW

plaid wool,

I don't think they would disintegrate so long you took them out eventually. I'm going to try both of the ways suggested. I think the tea bag will lend itself better to the coffee press and your method to the percolator.

Just use a regular paper coffee filter and a stapler.

French Press is the way to go.

I finally broke down and tried the french press on my April Trip. Ground up daily rations of grounds and used a french press that doubled as a mug with the press plunger removed.

Put coffee in, put in a couple of inches of boiling water in the mug for 2 minutes and then fill to the top. After 2 more minutes push the plunger and have fabulous coffee. Best coffee I ever had.

I have a bodum travel mug french press with no handle-just an insulated mug. It has an easily removed plunger too. Mug can serve double duty at night for cocoa or cider. I also bring a small brown coffee cup/measuring cup courtesy of Bannock that is my Maker's Mark cup.

Be sure not to grind the coffee to fine.

I used to be a tea bag coffee drinker-no more. It is French Press on every trip now.

We use old undies!
You know, tighty whiteys that are stained anyway.
Just 'dump' a couple of spoonfuls in the bottom and cinch the 'pile' of coffee up tight with a BDB, then dunk to your heart's content.
MMMMM'- Good to the last drop it is!!!
It's a case of a product doing double 'doody'!
Don't use too much coffee, though. It'll leave skidmarks on your tongue... Hmmmm???
