Looking to take the new jiffy pop to the BW next week. Good or bad idea? I personally am worried about bears but man what a treat!

I've never once not burned Jiffy Pop on an electric stove, much less over a fire. I think you'd be better off trying popcorn in a pot with a good amount of oil. You wouldn't have any garbage left over either.

Tried it 4 times - Nothing like burnt popcorn, at least over a campfire you don't stink up the whole house.

I also have not had good luck with Jiffy pop. Burnt every time. I will never take the stuff again.

If you are always shaking the jiffy pop, it will never burn. if you set it down on the flame or electric stove, then it will burn. weve done it many times on a gas stove and worked perfectly. probably takes five minutes but worth it.

Don't worry about bears, I have been going up there for 30 years and have not had any bear problems. Hang your food pack or bear barrels. If you cook over a fire or stove keep the heat on the cool side so you don't burn it and shake it a lot. It is a great treat in the woods. If it burns you had it too hot for too long, shake, shake, shake.

Cooked some up last weekend in N.H. while car camping on a coleman 2 burner (propane). Like others have said, keep the heat low and NEVER quit shaking/swirling the jiffy pop. It turns out fine. Don't get impatient and try to kick up the heat. Give it time, it'll happen.

now I've got to go see if there's some microwave popcorn in the cupboard....

Just for the record, Jiffy pop says right on the package that it should never be used over a fire or gas stove.

That being said, over a fire is the ONLY way I have ever prepared it. Sure it burns easy, but it tastes good anyway.

I have a jiffy-pop related funny story:

I was staying at a rental cabin in Minnesota with my family in mid July and we were sitting around the fire pit getting ready to make some jiffy pop. It is my habit to attach the Jiffy pop to a stick to make it easier to shake over a hot fire. I found a stick and some twine on the beach near the fire ring, so I tied the jiffy pop to the stick and let my 7 year old son get to cooking.

Now what I didn't know is that the "twine" was actually fireworks fuse left over from someone's 4th of July celebration.

Naturally, after a few moments of shaking the Jiffy pop over the fire, the fuse ignited in an impressive shower of sparks and hissing. My son (wisely?) yelled, threw the popcorn into the fire and ran like hell! The popcorn was ruined, but we all had a good laugh about it.

Funny story, Sasquatch! LOL

We say forget the Jiffy Pop, too. We've tried shaking it non-stop during the "cooking" process and the stuff still burns. It's permanently off our grocery list.

What we DO do is this - we already have vegetable oil for fish. We just bring some regular popcorn and cook it in one of our pots. Turns out perfect every time.

Our popcorn butter-oil got stolen by a seagull on Ogish last month. Never mind the bears, beware the gulls!

I'm 0 for 3 on the jiffy pop. Gave up on it. I did have regular popcorn on my list for my last trip, but it didn't make the cut-(I forgot it). I don't think I'm going to give jp another try. Great advice from the other guys though.

For the first time after several attempts I FINALLY GOT JIFFY POP TO WORK on our last trip. Started over coals...after 10 minutes or so decided to up the heat with a little fanning and some kindling. Worked great!!! I think the trick is being comfortable with leaving a lot of unpopped kernels. Think of the the unpopped ones as "extras" instead of being cheated if every kernel doesn't pop.
