I have often struggled with cooking rice over a fire. I finally have my freezer bag rice down to a science for solo portion.

1/3 cup rice, 1/2 tsp salt, 1 tsp mexican rice seasoning.

add 2/3 cup water to mix and boil for about 20 minutes in sealed bag. Made a perfect portion and there is no end to the possibilities of adding dehydrated veggies and a meat packet (spam, chicken, jerky).

Have you seen that microwave Uncle Bens that come in a pouch and is already cooked???

Just put the pouch in boiling water and heat it up for a few minutes.....it's just like sticking it in a microwave and heating it....

Dry bag packed rice-one portion is good for two. Also bag packed pearled barley. Just boil and let sit covered for 20-25 min. Light and easy to pack and cook.

If anyone is trying this FBC, you need to wait a long time for rice to soften (about 20 minutes). Also make sure to close the bag.

For the BW, I just go with instant rice. I'm using it in FBC dishes; not as a relatively plain side, so it's okay. If I were having it as a side dish without much else added, then I would want regular rice, I guess.

To make instant rice, all you need to do is boil water and add it to the rice and let it sit for a bit.

I've used this at home. I wanted to try it to see if it'd be good in BWCA. It worked great, though I still haven't used it in B-dub.
The bag has small perforations and you just throw it in the water. I got it at at a local grocery store.

i'm a Minute Rice person on the trail.at home my Wife has the trick to make real rice.the trail rice is just added to whatever as a filler.
back in the old days if you could make rice over the fire and have it work it was a big deal and you were a real cook.the old camping books always have a bit on the trick or secret to cooking rice.
