Going in next week, but instead of shore lunch, we are just going to crush up Saltine Crackers, and use that to fry our fish in. Will this work?

I use crushed saltines with a bit of flour and lemon pepper mixed in. Dip the fillet in egg, then the cracker mix, fry and enjoy.

I agree with Fitgers, not sure crushing them alone will be fine enough, some flour, maybe cornmeal, or fine bread crumbs, plus whateve spices you want. Put in bag, add crushed saltines to the mix in whatever quantities you like when ready at lunch time. Gooooooooooooood eats.

I run mine through a food processor and it makes a great breading. Doesn't weigh much and takes up very little space.

A mix of cornmeal and breadcrumbs - dipped in eggs works great!

Yes, it works well. We also use Chicken in a Biscuit crushed up, delicious. Have to crush them into really fine powder, but are really really good.

That's what my father in law did and I liked it.

I've done both panko and saltines - pretty much prefer the panko now.

We dredge in seasoned flour, then dip into an egg/milk mix (both from powedered versions) then roll in the breading. The trick is to get the egg/milk to the right consistency so the breading stays on well but you aren't making a batter out of it all.

with saltines dont add anymore salt till you taste it, crushed up ritz are good also, one of my favorites is potatoe flakes(add garlic powder-lawrys- crushed whole black pepper) potatoe flakes are AWESOME on sunnies ! word

I like anything but Shore Lunch...gimmicky and over-priced.
Panko is good...
In the past I've concocted my own...I like a bit of spice with my fish.

If you fish like I have lately you'll just switch to sausage and cheese.

I like stone ground white cornmeal mixed with flour. There are some mixes in the ;Camping Recipes Forum' in a thread called 'Homemade Fish Batter' or something like that. Just a couple weeks back.

Oh my god, Chicken in a Biscuit is the greatest cracker of all time. I have to use that on my upcoming trip!

I like to carry a pouch of hushpuupy mix with me, it's multi-functional. When that runs out pancake mix always does the trick- just add spice to your taste!

I agree! They saved my life once... stuck in a car that was buried in the snow in a ditch during a blizzard... nothing to eat but Chicken in a Biscuit... by the time we were rescued we were down to our last cracker.

OK, it was only 6 hours stuck in the freezing cold but we were college aged girls and sure we were going to die :-)

I have had a soft spot in my heart for those crackers ever since!
