Sounds like an awesome trip! I would love to see all the wildlife that you saw. I really want to see moose and otters.
Wow, do I ever wish I was up there right this second, after reading that...sigh. Thanks for the write up!

Great report. Thanks for sharing. My wife wasn't much of a fan of the landing on the Gaskin side of the Gaskin/Winchell portage either.
Do you ever take the "Black Pearl" out on the Mississippi by Clearwater?
Have you been to that new outfitter in Clearwater?

TB.... yes it was quite amazing yesterday. Supposed to be more of the same today. Hopefully can get enough yard work done early to go enjoy it somewhere w/ my wife and kids this afternoon.
I've been trying to come up with places in the area to take the canoe out. We live in Big Lake. We've only had the canoe for a year (bought it last fall from VNO) and have done most of our area paddling at Lake Maria. It's hard to find good places around here to paddle that don't have to many motorboats. I think we'll give the Miss a try sometime.
Do you know of any other good places to paddle in the area?
We keep meaning to stop at that outfitters but just haven't done it yet. Do they have much other than the canoes they rent and sell?

They are just getting started. They have some gear for sale & some clothing, books, etc. also. Other than that & the canoes....I think the big service the provide is shuttle service up & down the river. I think it was like $20 per person to St. Cloud or Monticello??
Down here I like heading out on rivers to avoid the crowds & motorboats. I find the fishing is much easier as well. Especially on the smaller streams. The Rum, Crow, Sauk & Platte are all reasonably close. (Within an hour or so) A bit further out are a couple of my favorites. The St. Croix & Kettle. Also, running through Big Lake is the Elk River. I've never paddled it but apparently it is navigable by canoe. I have seen it mentioned in the Paddling Minnesota guidebook.
Trouble is. I sold my beater canoe a couple years back. (Need to get another)The smaller streams are generally a bit to shallow & rocky for my comfort level of bringing the Black Pearl down. Too much wear 'n' tear. So I haven't hit them lately.
Would like to get out down here at least once more before the snow flies.
BTW I have a brother who lives just outside of Big Lake on highway 15.

I really enjoyed reading your trip report - what a wonderful adventure! I especially enjoyed your photos - loved the sunset shot with the overturned canoe. I've been through the Horseshoe/Vista portage several times - gotta love those rocks! You did a great job of bringing some luxury items - beer, a lizzard, and a cribbage game. It sounds like you had fun. Thanks for sharing your experience.

What a beautiful baby! Congratulations and thanks for sharing her photo with us.
We have a canoe-trip baby ourselves, and I think they are always beautiful children. (he is 39 now, but he was a beautiful child.)

CONGRATS mom and dad!! What a sweetie she is and how cool that she'll have her own special BW story before she's even born! If I were sending out a Welcome gift, I'd send you a copy of a favorite book of mine... maybe you already have it or maybe you'll decide to pick it up for the new babe: Aurora: A Tale of the Northern Lights
Enjoy that little bundle of life and sincere congratulations!

Congrats TB! I'm surprised you didn't name her Winchell!!
Loved the report. I've done that loop as well on a solo trip. Base camped on the island site on Gaskin. I, too, enjoyed the Carl site as well on my first nite in.
Thanks again.
We all have to believe in something. I believe I'll go paddle.
