Hi all,
Thinking of doing a cherry lake loop in mid June. Will be entering at EP 25 and taking the tow up to sucker-birch lake portage. We'll have about 6 nights and 7 days. Will end trip back at birch-sucker lake portage with tow back to la tourell's.
Route will be birch>carp>seed>knife river>knife>south arm>amoeber>topaz>cherry>lunar>lake of the clouds>gijikiki>ottertrack>knife>knife river>seed>carp>birch. My question is: is it feasible or how long to get to south arm of knife lake from the sucker/birch lake portage ? We'll spend a few nights on cherry lake. Any other ideas while in the area? Thanks !

Did a similar trip years ago but without the tows. Camped first night near Thunder Point after a long paddling day. Camped second night on Ester after going through Ottertrack. Third and fourth night were on Cherry. The site at the narrows is a good one. Looking at mileage, you can get to South Arm the first day and Cherry the second easily. We came back through Amoeber and Knife. Great area....kinda popular. You will see lots of people.
Different things to see....Eddy Falls on SAK, Benny Ambrose stuff on Ottertrack, Thunder Point on Knife, Isle of the Pines on Knife (Root Beer Lady)

We came at Cherry from Saganaga - still our Trip report might give you some ideas.
Lake of the Clouds, The Enchanted Forest portage, Thunder Point are a few of the must see areas.

I think even if you are slower moving, you can make it from the "Indian Portage" at the throat of the "Witch Penninsula" (Sucker-Birch) to the north side of Thunder Point camp site #1449 in about 5 hours or less. It maps out at about 10 + miles. Cowdoc is right on with his comments.

We made it up through Moose to Cherry a number of years ago. Very doable in your time frame. Here's my trip report.

So I did some searching and reading of trip reports, campsites, and portages updates and it seems there's a trail of bear encounters up and down the knife lake area. Is this still an issue ? Also, how bad can knife lake get if the wind picks up and we're heading back out to the birch-sucker lake portage ? Would you recommend taking the smaller lakes just south of knife back (through Vera>trident>frog) ?

There are still plenty of bears in the Knife area, I've seen 3 which is 3 more than I've seen anywhere else in the BW. When the wind blows, depending on the speed it can be anything from one tough paddle to a long day at camp as you watch it blow. We once took the line of smaller lakes to the south, Sema, Spoon, Dix, Skoota, Missionary, Vera and Ensign to avoid the wind. That option is no walk in the park either, there are some above average portages on that route.
