I believe that he has left that area.

Do Wood. Mudro will be there next time - but oh - man so tempting... maybe I should go grab that permit!!!"

Do it!

There are fish in Wood. Good luck. Sneak up to Basswood for a day trip, too.

I stayed on Fourtown last year. Campsite 1102 (north end). Great site. Caught a few bass and bluegill right from camp. Caught a lot of walleye in the bay to the right (east) of the site.

The portage in was not the funnest though. A lot of rocky areas to walk through.

I will solve the mystery or get bitten by bugs trying... probably both.

This board is so helpful.

My heart says do what I had planned and take a trip to Fourtown with my wife. I've been to Fourtown before, but it was only to paddle out from Boot to Mudro. It's fairly big water and has a ton of junk in the woods for both of us to explore. So, I have decided to stay the course and enter at Wood Lake. It's new territory for me, so I got that going for me.

Thanks everyone!!

Since your choice to go in Wood was only made because of the permit availability -
Reevaluate your trip goals and decide from there. I just really like the Mudro-Fourtown area better than Wood and Hula - though Indiana is beautiful with super clear water.

Do something new. Explore. Life is an adventure!

Stay with Wood. Do Fourtown next time.
Finding a campsite is easier on week days no matter where you go.

I hate second guessing myself. Stay the course.

So I've managed to work myself into a knot. Here's the deal:

Solo trip. I have a permit for Wood Lake, entering July 22. Never been on Wood Lake, looks like a nice area. I reserved late so I had to take what was available. I was planning on base camping on Wood Lake and day tripping from there.

Now I discover that Mudro Lake has a permit available for July 22. Sure, it may be gone by the time I decide, but as of 11:33 this morning, it was available. Mudro had been my first choice, base camping on Fourtown. BUT.... in your estimation, will Fourtown be a zoo with likely little campsite availability? I am asking based on other's experience, as I understand that no one can predict with any precision.

It will also be a longer, tougher paddle to get from Picket, through Mudro, to Fourtown, as opposed to a single portage into Wood. My main concern is that I won't find a campsite on Fourtown. I'm not adverse to Boot, but Fourtown would be my first choice.

Thoughts?

Mike
