Last minute packing always seems to be necessary. Sigh. Busy life. A short time ago we ran some class I and II river in WV for a weekend camping trip. Just got back from being gone for 2 weeks for work stuff... That is how life rolls. Packing without having to take food sure would be lighter. :)

I traveled the North Shore and am currently near Atikokan. Every fire indicator I've seen on fire danger is at the lowest setting of 'low'. No worries. With all of the rain, it will take a few weeks of dry weather for that to change.

Heading in the 4th of July into BWCA then Canada then BWCA fot almost 2 full weeks. Packing in earnest now."
It's probably time to get serious about packing, I mean why wait till the last minute?

The State "Drought Map" showes that only the northwest corner of Minnesota is "dry " righ now.

Are you living in the SW where there is drought? As others have said we have had more than our fair share in NE Wis.

We were in the BWCAW last week and lived in our rain gear 5 days of 7. The lakes are high, although not as high as during the Spring melt. As Jackfish wrote, the probability of a fire ban is close to zero. We had trouble finding wood for a small campfire. If we had tried to cook with wood, we would have been in trouble.

If northeastern Minnesota has seen anything close to the amount of rain we've had here in Wisconsin (and probably southern Minnesota), the likelihood of a fire ban should be next to zero. The only way you're going to get anything other than a guess from anyone is to call the Ely ranger station.

Always be prepared and pack a stove.
