I am up there that time of the year every year for God only knows how many years now. Bugs are typically bad that time of the year. But when the bugs are bad, the fishing is good. I guess if there are bugs on you that means it isn't real windy and you are able to fish from a canoe. You have to take the good with the bad. Sometimes the bugs aren't that bad, but also sometimes the fishing isn't that good. Make sure you bring some quality rain gear and some warm clothes. It seems to rain a little more than average that time of the year. It isn't always cold, we have had some extremely warm weather at times and 70 degrees and a sunny reflection off the lake can be down right hot. Just come prepared and you should be good. The fishing can more than make up for the bad bugs and the bad weather.

I've been once that early. Loved it. Bugs were nonexistent, fishing was terrific, not very busy, and weather was not too bad for most of the trip. Got snowed on one night, and three inches of rain fell between the last two nights.

Late May and early June are some of my favorite times to be in the BWCA. There is not a ton of traffic on the lakes yet, and I would say that fishing is very consistent with Walleyes being concentrated around flowing water yet, and smallies starting to display pre-spawn and spawning behaviors.

The biggest drawback at this time of the year can be the black flies. Some years they seem to be nonexistent and some years they seem to be in such numbers that they can carry you away! I would recommend long pants and long sleeve shirts and possibly a bug net if you are easily bug stressed.

Hope to see you on the trail this spring!

I have been to the BWCA three times but I have always gone during the month of July. My family and I are looking at coming the last week in May 2019 and I was wondering if you all could tell me if that is a good time or not? Bugs, fishing, and weather being my main concerns. Thanks
