I’ll second what has been said. We just finished a family trip going Poplar, Meads, Pillsbury, Allen, Caribou and back out.

The Allen side of the portage was very mucky and a little difficult to load given the 4 man Northstar we rented. Portage itself was around 95 rods and not terribly difficult.

We also stayed at the Eastern Pillsbury site and we pretty much had the lake to ourselves. Allen site was ok. Most of the tent pads seemed to have a fair amount of roots, so we pitched pretty close to the fire grate for 1 night.

Bumstead: "Wow...being watched by a wolf. That's outdoor adventure at its finest!

The Allen end of the Portage is a slog....don't step too far off the beaten path when dropping your canoe in. I went mid-thigh deep very quickly and almost lost my shoe.

East site on Pills and the Allen site are decent places to stay."

We stayed at the east site on Pillsbury that trip and really liked it. Very quiet lake as we only saw one group pass through during our 3 days there. There was a lot of wolf scat back in the woods behind our site.

On another trip I saw a wolf swimming in Horseshoe Lake and then walking in the woods just off the shoreline.

Yes....... the Allen end is definitely a slog

cowdoc is correct

The last time I did that portage I had a creepy someone is watching me feeling and then I came across a very big, still steaming pile of wolf scat

Voyageur maps label it as a 95 rodder. I recall it as a little muddy and its right along side the stream.

Thanks guys, this site doesn't show that there is one there but PP does.

What cowdoc said - and it's not a hard portage.

Allen tapers to the west, almost like a river/stream.....and then there is a portage.

I am confused, is there a portage between these lakes or are they connected with a river?
