cburton103: "I believe we were there May 29th (trip started May 27th), but we were in two canoes and walked around that island a bit. We chatted briefly with the group in a campsite just northeast of the Russell outflow before fishing the outflow. I think we'd seen members of that same group the previous day in the Ram area portaging back into Sturgeon. Was that you guys?"

Not us - we pulled out on the 29th, a day early, because of the storms that were rolling in.

I'm looking forward to our trip!"

We were planning on including the Poet's Chain on our late May/early June trip last year, but as we paddled around the outflow of Russell into Sturgeon (and somehow managed to catch no fish despite trying for an hour) we decided to skip that portion due to the crazy amount of water and our lack of luck fishing. One more reason to get back to that area!"

We saw a two-canoe group land canoes and walk around that little island at the outflow of Russell where it hits the Sturgeon Narrows - May 24 mid afternoon...any chance that was your team?"

AdamXChicago: "I know it’s a bit early, but does anyone have a feel for June water levels? Heading in 30 days from now and am wondering if it is going to be a repeat of last spring - hadn’t encountered water that high since I started my Quetico addiction in 1978. Heavy and/or constant rain over the next few weeks will obviously affect conditions, so I’ve got an eye out for that. Would appreciate any first hand reports from any of you May paddlers too. Thank you

As your date gets closer you can always contact Trevor Gibb (Quetico Park Superintendent) by email with questions. I've found he usually responds within a day or so. His email address: Trevor.Gibb@ontario.ca

We head in May 21 via PP for a week - will report back upon return.

Luckee: "An addict since 78! With a visit every year AdamX?

I got hooked only in 2018 and missed 20-21, so I think I'm just a light user. :)

If your addiction includes fishing, as mine does, you may also be wondering about water temps too. "

Not exactly an annual visitor (missed most of the 80’s and early 90’s due to life getting in the way), but I try to do 2 or 3 trips a year since I retired to make up for that. Here’s hoping for a dry May (compared to last year) and that walleye are biting ??

Will depend on the amount of rain between now and your entry. The water from the thaw will be well on its way to Hudson Bay.
