I have brought students to BWCA on the ice 7 times.....5 have been mid March or later. All were great....packed snow, long days, warm sun.

Last year was the only year that we had to reschedule.

Its a great time to go, especially with kids.

Two concerns, you talk about fishing. Certain species in some of those lakes will be closed that time of year.
Skied the Kawishiwi river once, remember it is a river and certain areas will have thin ice(narrows, rapid areas, maybe sharp points etc.). Wintergreen sled dogs much of it and may be could tell you where and where not to go.

Should be OK as far as snow and ice conditions go. Obviously, there is always the possibility of craziness like last year, but this year is looking better so far. As a reference, I took a trip in the Gunflint area on March 20-22, 2011. There was still 3 feet of snow and two feet of solid ice. The eastern BWCA holds onto its snow and ice longer than the Ely area, but you still should be just fine. I'm planning a trip for the same time frame as you this year.

quote dogmusher: "Ojibway usually is NOT plowed. I might be down that direction this weekend and will report back If I do."

Interesting. Looks like I need to modify the Access list to reflect that.

I suppose my only concern would be if and how fast the lot at Ojibway Lake is plowed. Since parking is maybe 1/2 mile off Fernberg, it wouldn’t be pleasant shoveling yourself back to the road.

Based upon year's past, do you think a March 15-17 trip would be ok to shoot for? It is me and my 9 year old son. Planning on going in at Ojibway and staying on Triangle for 2 nights. Fishing Triangle and maybe venturing over to the Kawishiwi one day. If slush is a concern, we might have our stuff shuttled by snowmobile. We'll be hot tenting. Any concerns?
