I'll be at the lake July 5-10.

Yep, small world! I was excited when I saw your post and the pic of your grandpa, I knew I've seen him around. I'm finishing up pharmacy school and on rotations for the next year, so I don't know if I'll have much time to get up to WI... I'll definitely keep an eye out for ya and say hi!

Grandpa was a BSF teacher, yes, and one of Veryl's mentors. Veryl actually took over Grandpa's leadership position when he stepped down.

Small world, man.

quote SaganagaJoe: "I assume you belong to Veryl or Tom Scherkie. :) Yep, everyone helps with the docks.

That is our Sunfish in the pictures. And no, none of the Halls deer hunt. We're the brown cabin fourth up from the point where the MLB baseball player has his cabin - the fireworks guy.

"

Yep Veryl. I met their son Jacob when I was doing my undergrad at Eau Claire. I am thinking of some guys in a blue cabin further up the peninsula for the deer.

I assume you belong to Veryl Chihak or Tom Scherkie. :)

Yep, everyone helps with the docks. Apparently someone caught a walleye out of Sand Lake within the past few years but won't tell where it is. The DNR does not stock the lake anymore.

Hey dude...

I've been going to a good friend's cabin on Sand Lake for the past 7 or 8 years. On Memorial Day and Labor Day I am pretty sure I have helped put your grandpa's dock in / out (all the neighbors up and down the peninsula work together for docks / boat lifts, right?).

Small world. I read that the WIS DNR is no longer stocking walleyes in sand lake since they do not naturally reproduce; their last survey estimated around 300-400 left in the lake that were all a pretty good size.

We have caught some good sized sunfish and a few crappie, but nothing great out of Sand. It is nice to bring a canoe down the road to Green Lake for some good sized bluegills, or canoe on the Yellow River and get nice smallmouth. Usually we go out "fishing" and it's just hanging out on the boat while getting our lines wet.

Is that your guys' sailboat in the pics? Another friend of mine (on a different lake) has a Hobie Catamaran... that thing is a blast to use on days that would otherwise be too crappy to go out on the water.

We also deer hunt up there. If I am thinking of the right cabin, you guys always have a nice collection of deer strung up each fall after opener. Not 100% sure on the cabin (maybe it's your neighbors) but I for sure recognize your grandpa.

Was your grandpa a bible study teacher? I know one of the guys on the peninsula had a pretty big influence on my friend's dad.

Thanks everyone. I'm looking forward to my time there in July. The cabin is the only place that even comes close to the BWCA in my book, and for different reasons.

This is not related to my BWCA canoe tripping, and yet it is. The same focus that Sigurd Olson gave me for the minute and beautiful details of life was employed to write this essay. Hope you all enjoy it as you hit the lakes this summer.
