Schucanoe, I think you're referring to the 130R from Cirrus to NE Arm of Quetico, then yes its easy to find as the lake necks down to almost a point. Portage is easy to spot.

Thank you for your RIP about Kanoes. i understand your feeling. Three years ago we had a fine crew member who one year later was killed in a tragic tree on tent fall in the Quetico. Great guy, sadly missed, and his son just could not go with him that year or it might have been a double tragedy. We miss this fine fellow and I look at the videos of him on our trip.

Skipped the East End Cirrus Portage, paddled thru the narrows mid south into Quetico, last year (so called geezer trip). Going in you'll need to pick up permits at South Beaverhouse, at least we did.

Beaverhouse entry trip from last Sept. with Kiporby, SunCatcher, Kanoes (RIP).

Beaverhouse to Kasakokwog zoomed a bit.

This is a pretty area, not too well traveled, and reasonable fishing. Not hard to get into once you know the drive is longer. These are fairly large lakes, so more vulnerable to the wind, as is Pickerel.

My crew was there three years ago, and a great trip other than the first two days when we experienced the historic Hudson's Bay Blow at the end of July 2013. Look into trip reports for Lakes of Quetico, Lake of Gallilee, as out trip reporter flew over from Israel to join us.

The portages were not hard and the last 4 days of the trip were picture perfect. Have a great trip. We are headed more to the east this year.

I agree with Amarillo - the K side is easy to spot, bu the Cirrus side is not hard, just slightly trickier because its not the obvious route and some maps have it wrong. Probably cost me 2-3 minutes at most.

The Kasakokwog side is at the end of that little cove and has a sandy landing. Easy to see.

On the Cirrus side, that portage is to the right (or west) of the maps location. It is not up the swampy valley where it appears it should be. Just around the corner to the right it is.

A bit of a tough portage. Decent climb either direction.

And it was not easy to find. I think in different location on all three months aps I had. Chrismar was closest, but still not clear.

What billconnor said. We did the Cirrus->Kasakokwog portage in decent weather, and while there is some elevation as noted, I would classify this portage as somewhere closer to "moderate" than "difficult". It's a good workout IMHO.

The portage between Cirrus and the NE arm of Quetico is easy (not much elevation change).

Karola,
I tie my line directly to the baits, 10# Fireline when going after trout.

First Solo

The trip report says most I can. The BH to Cirrus portage was easy. The Cirrus to Kasakokwog was tougher. I broke it into two parts and ate a snack in the center, at the apex of the ridge.

In all good weather, I could do it in three days. I just took it easy.

Paging Bill Connor to the white courtesy phone. He might be on a trip right now, but Bill has paddled that area in a loop - in on Cirrus, into Kasakokwog, then out on Quetico and Beaverhouse.

quote AmarilloJim: "The suspended fish seemed to be holding 30' down. We trolled deep down husky jerks about 15' down and when they committed to them you knew it. Found them along banks and out over open water. Sometimes you had to troll a while to find pods of fish. Fish relating to structure seemed to be 30'-45' down and once you found these you could go back to them all day every day. "
Good to know! We were also using a heavy, white leader which might have messed things up for us. I'm a newbie to laker fishing so it is a learning process. I just still can't believe we never hooked into a single fish for how much area we covered. Oh well, maybe next time.

Bring the deep fish up slow so they can burb their air bladders. I usually only fish for dinner but had some newbies along this trip and they had a blast!

I just got back from spending a few nights on Quetico, but never caught a laker!!! Can I trouble you by asking what depths you were fishing? I fished (trolled) miles of shoreline, mostly between 20-50 feet of water. I did spend a good amount of time in 10-15 feet. A little frustrated by not catching one, but still had a great time.

AmarilloJim 06/02/2016 07:12AM
We just got back from that area. Very nice and caught lakers every time out in all three lakes. We just paddled the entire length of Cirrus and viewed Sue Falls. Portages on the western end of Cirrus were all well used and easy to find.

There is a pretty sizable beaver dam between Quetico and the Kasakokwog portage which will need to be portaged also. A healthy west wind on all of those lakes can force a layover.

Planning a shortened trip in August from Beaverhouse to Kasakokwog as we haven't spent much time in that part of the park yet. Was wondering if anyone has had any experience on the more northerly route out of the north end of Beaverhouse to western Cirrus to northeast Quetico to Kasakokwog. Looks like we could save about four miles of paddling over the more southerly route of Beaverhouse to Quetico to Kasakokwog but hadn't heard much about the Beaverhouse to Cirrus portages or especially the Cirrus to northeast Quetico portage (listed as about 130 rods on some maps). If decent, we may go in one way and out the other. Thanks.
