I don't know if this is correct or not, but we've always treated the limits as PER PERSON. We've never been challenged about that assumption. Anytime I think I might want to run long, I simply buy my "overage" inside Canada. (Actually, that's not a big deal in Ft. Frances, since going to the government regulated liquor store is pretty much on the way thru town (but I've not encountered any real bargains and sometimes the selection is a bit limited...can you imagine a liquor store in Canada not carrying Molson's?).

Cowdoc is correct. Technically you are allowed either 1.5L of wine or 40 oz (1.14L) of liquor or 8.5L (24 - 355ml cans) of beer. We usually go a little over that and it has not been a problem. We usually buy our liquor at the duty free store in the Soo before crossing. The selection and prices are better in the US. Bill

It's not a hassle. Just limits on how much you have for personal consumption. If I recall, hard liquor is 40oz per person??.....sound right Q gang?? It's on a website someplace. They ask when you go through customs and you just say you are under the limit. I've never had them ask to see it to confirm my answers.

I've never taken alcohol on trips before but I'm taking a group this next year that would like to take some spirits. Is it a hassle or red flag to take your own or is it just better to buy over the border? If it's better to buy in Canada where can we purchase? I saw on one outfitters web site that purchase locations and times are limited in Atikokan. We will do an Int. Falls crossing.
