I plan on snowshoeing in and caring my Frost River Isle Royale JR pack. (Husband will pull the pulk)

I would not consider XC skiing with my CCS Pioneer pack however. Too big for that IMO.

You'll want a chest strap with a quick release buckle, to hold the main shoulder straps together in the front of your chest and off your arms while you pole. Something simple like this might work - make sure it is quick release in case you fall through.

Another option is to go to fleet farm, buy a cheap plastic toboggan. Then some rope, a carbineer or buckle, and a fat army surplus belt - make a simple sled harness. Or; use one of your backpacks with a belt to tie the sled harness to - the shoulder straps on your backpack will help prevent the belt from sliding down while you pull the sled. Not fancy, but maybe OK for a short trip.

A wide pack will absolutely mess with your arm swing/poling. A day pack or a telemark pack will work for day trips and hut to hut, but if your going to be out for awhile. A kids plastic sled will work for small trips, and a toboggan will work for a bigger trip.

Anyone ever ski in while carrying a portage pack?

I'll be skiing into a lake for a day of fishing. Roughly, 1-1.5 mile ski. All flat. I don't have a pulk and my other packs are more designed for lightweight backpacking. I worry they aren't durable enough for the job. So, that leaves me with the Duluth pack to get the gear in there.

I'll be packing my vexilar, 3 ice rods, snow shoes and normal day trip stuff.
