I just purchased one...pricey, but by all accounts worth the money. I haven't used it, but it is very well made, and lightweight. I know Harlan from Red Lake Outfitters (WCPP) uses these when he outfits folks for their trips, and many on the board here speak highly of them. After all my research, I bit the bullet, and paid for quality. I've learned over the years that the least expensive route is often to buy the best first.

Have you had any problem with heat warp or bending?

I just use an old grate from a charcoal grill. The bottom ones that hold the charcoal are a good size.

This grill has been on my radar for years but other gear took preference. Maybe for next year. I just use a small backpackers grill, the kind with folding legs when I solo and I bought a large rectangle grill topper for groups but that bent from the heat. The purcell is definitely a quality product from all the reviews I've seen.

Not from heat. My Travelers bent under a 9 year old's foot, but it bent right back.

The Purcell grills are outstanding. Light, strong and last forever.

I've had a couple of Purcell grills for a decade and they are absolutely everything they are supposed to be - lightweight and strong. Highest recommendation.

Absolutely outstanding product. I have the Streamside Voyageur and love it. Super lightweight and strong. It definitely pays for itself in Quetico. You can find other lower priced options out there, but if you can accept the cost, they are the best.

I have owned one for about 5 years and it goes on every trip........and stays in the bottom of my cooking bag and has yet to see the heat. Weird, I know. I also picked up a couple of those titanium rods they sell which I thought might come in handy to help position the grill over a fire pit (of course they would)...........one day I might even find out.

Do most of you like the steamside models over the bars,which are a tad lighter. The steamside looks like you could just lay like a steak or hamburger on top if desired?

The nonstreamside is better if you are primarily using pots and pans as there are more bars and are stronger. I'd also feel more comfortable with the nonstreamside over a raging fire. I've done steaks and brats, but you need to be careful. I picked up a streamside this year to do meat and fish. They are so light I don't mind bringing 2.

I have used a voyageur and a voyageur stream side for over 10 years. You couldn't buy better, and I like supporting a small shop that makes a great product. I expect my boys will continue using them after I'm dead.

With that said, they are just fire grates, and my pots boiled and my meat grilled just fine on cheapo grates from Campmor before I bought the Purcell Trench grills. The cheap grates were just heavier, rusted, and did not clean up as well, and I had to replace them every so often.

I got the streamside packer and it is well made. Edges are smoothed over and where the grating meets the frame, the grating are all smoothed over, ensuring minimal snaging. It is strong, having supported many of my cooking pots full of water. A couple lake trout and bass have also seasoned the grill and it is made for that. It comes in a lightweight travel sack that is sized just right and is needed for containing the soot from the fire.

Pricey? I guess. But it will most likely be the only backpacking/canoeing grill I will ever have to purchase.

I have the streamside. Very expensive for a small item but the craftsmanship is really good. They do not warp at high heat. The fiddly part is getting them level and stable over a fire but that is true with any grate. I don't cook much over a fire but this would be indispensable if you fire cook in Quetico. Also, much lighter than the standard chromed steel great which is flimsy by comparison.

Did you purchase direct from Purcell?

I did. I sent him an email of what I wanted, and told him the email address for my paypal acct. He sent an invoice, and once I paid it, the order was shipped quickly. Total time was probably just over a week. I'm pretty sure he doesn't have someone "manning the phones" 24/7, so I thought it was a reasonably fast process. Just don't expect to get immediate replies from your queries. I believe each correspondence was answered within 24 hours though.

I ordered the Travelers model on Friday and had it by Tuesday. It looks very nice and I am impressed also with the letter explaining the material it is made of and actually a break in period the first time(don't heat it in one spot immediatly(sp),spread the heat around).
Also a hand written letter talking about where he goes back packing and did mention he has not been to Quetico.

I just got my streamside Voyageur recently and appreciated the letter/info as well. Nice stationary, too. Just nice touches all around--love it.

Awesome grills, I got talked onto buying it by Maverick---we bought them together to save on shipping, I was a little skeptical but one use and the lighter weight I was sold. That was around 10 years ago. Still going strong.

I have one as well, I love that thing. Believe the hype. :)

I bumped it up since I went and bought one last year and extremely happy with the product. Grilling time on open campfires coming soon.
Purcell the best

I have now used my Voyageur grill for 2 seasons, and it is exactly as advertised. Quality. Even the bag it comes with is quality. I have been trying to transition away from cooking with a stove, and only carrying a stove as back up, or fire ban. The Purcell Trench will be handed down to my son, I am sure.
Interestingly, I have this under seat bag that I keep my fishing tackle in:

It has a "cutting board" as a stiffener in a zippered pocket on the bottom. It works well as a cutting board, but not so much as a stiffener. Too thin. However, my Voyageur Purcell trench just fits, and makes the bottom of the bag super stiff! Any smaller version would fit easily, I'm sure, and your grill has a useful location to be stored!

I had a hand written note on mine too, but especially liked that it came wrapped in several pages of the local Statesman Examiner newspaper. I flattened them out and read a bit about what was going on in the area.
