What do you think? Will it work in the Boundary Waters?

This looks interesting. I always hate to put food directly on the BWCA grills - never know what was there before you. And, the space between the grates is too big.

Must look into this mat. - I found several on Amazon, some thicker than others - tolerates up to 600 degrees.

Based on the negative reviews I've read the problem seems to be that the food doesn't end up tasting like BBQ but rather, more like fried since it is cooking in its own pooled grease. Makes sense. I think I'll take a pass. Anyway I bring my own grills.

We've used one the past couple trips and it works well for pancakes and bacon. Much easier to use than the tin foil we used to use for pancakes. If it's windy you'll have to use rocks in the corners to hold it in place.

Used one on spring trip. Worked ok but stuff still wanted to fall through grate. Was hoping they would help with that. Heat transfer seemed good though.

A buddy took one last year and it was destroyed by the end of the trip.

Not a good idea, if you ask me.

BTW, I didn't see the "destroyed version". We only talked about this, as I was not on the trip with him last year, but for the few meals they used it, it worked. It just didn't last.

He said it might be worth buying one every year, knowing it will not last multiple trips.

Later,

Geo

The mats are cool.

But like other said, it is more like frying than grilling.

And they are not rated for exposure to flames. It is hard to avoid flames in the BW.

Similar not the same, I use a silicone liner in my electric oven. element is about 3/4 inch above and it works great, probably 5 years now. Looks the same and takes a lot of heat, nothing sticks to it. Should work well on camp grate, make a very useful griddle! Sure pack easier.

I will sometimes bring a smaller portable Grate to put on top of the BWCA grate so things don't fall through the slats. Works great.
