Nice! I'm a fan of Smashing Pumpkins, but I gotta say that there was some incongruity hearing their cover of "Landslide" together with images of big northern pike being unhooked.
Here's what I chose for a Baja barracuda: https://youtu.be/gxPUrl1seY8?t=1m38s

i rarely sit through a 30 minute video on the internet , excellent job Mike ! your a natural and a beast , triple portaging and the shot leaving the portage and having to go back for your camera nice touch , did a fish hit your canoe at the 10:55 mark ? didn't like you in it's territory ;)

The filming was a lot of fun actually even though yes it was a lot of extra work but I really wanted something to remember of my first trip there. Don't know what the hell hit my boat couldn't get a glimpse of it. My first thought was a beaver? I was only in 5 ft of water lol!!! Glad you enjoyed the video.

That was a great video. That is what a solo is all about. I wish I had the patience to record my trips. I'm lucky if I can get some pictures as I go. Thank you for your video and the work it took to edit it.

Good job....that will be a treasured keepsake some day.
Glad to see there is a like minded guy throwing the big flat rap. I have advocated it a few times on this very board but one hears very little buzz about them in print or on the web. Where did you get yours? I have only seen them at one shop and zero catalogs in all my travels.

quote mvernelson: "Didn't take but a couple photos but shot this video. Had a blast and EVERYTHING was smashing the giant size Flat rap and the sallies were all about the Ned Rig. Will never leave without them! "
Perhaps a lame question here, but where can I find the flat raps other than online? Gander Mountain has gone belly up, and Fleet Farm does not have them. I did get some tail dancers on sale at the local GM, but I would like to pick up a couple of the flats.

Though I have a million plugs already, I couldn't resist ordering a couple in yellow perch color :) Try Cabelas, I found them there, and on Amazon. "
Thanks. I know where to get them online; just wondering if there is anywhere between the Twin Cities and Ely to pick up a couple.

I bought a couple of them a few years ago and still had one left. I can't remember where I got them . I just threw it back as far as I could when trolling then then ripped another few yards off the reel. I was really surprised at how the Lakers were taken too it being so close to the surface.

quote Mocha: "great video! watched the entire thing, great music, fishing, wood splitting, fire building.
often wonder how a solo tripper gets such nice shots of themself from behind. seems that one lure did the trick for all the fish."
Mocha, this was the first time I filmed so I'll tell you what I figured out. Keep changing the camera positions then watch footage in your tent at night. See what looks best. Setting the camera up in unordinary places gets some of the neatest shots. When you think you've shot enough footage, shoot lots more! Plan on spending a lot of extra time chasing your camera back and fourth. Just set the camera up take some fun video and enjoy watching during the off season.

Hey Mike, If you don't mind me asking, how did you keep the Go-Pro charged for the whole trip? I wanted to do the same type of filming but ran out of battery power way faster than I thought. Did you have a charging station or just lots of extra batteries? Great video and editing!

Excellent video, great fun to watch...thanks for sharing. Looks like the ned rig was pretty effective. I'll need to add that to my kit. I have a smaller flat rap. Hasn't been super productive for me. I don't think I have ever seen a bigger version like yours.

My boys and I had a blast watching your video. We've made several trips to that same area so it was fun to point out some of the same places that we've been to. I appreciate how much time you have into the video as well. I have so much footage on my GoPro that I'll probably never take the ridiculous amount of time to edit.

I took two external batteries bought from Walmart. They are about 7 inches long by 3 inches. They have all the USB ports etc for charging electronics. Those two batteries kept my phone "which I used to text the wife daily via an app and gps", my single Go-Pro, and my G.P.S. charged for ten and days and I had juice left in both batteries when the trip was done.

For whatever reason the Flat Rap 16 were discontinued. I actually pulled that lure off the rod while waiting for Williams and Hall to pick me up at the portage and left it laying on a large boulder by the water. I hope whoever found it gets some good use from it lol! I use the site 16 Original floaters a lot trolling walleye and they are great too. Im a fan of big profile baits though. The Ned Rig is new to me. That was the second fishing trip I've used it. The first one being Tablerock lake in MO. The lure really shined there too.

Thanks Dean , thats really cool you and the boys could relate! I don't know how much video I actually had but I edited to the main highlights which gave me about 35 minutes of video then took out some more. I spent the previous two months before my trip watching BWCA you-tube videos in anticipation of my trip. I remembered the parts of a lot of other videos that I quickly grew board with so I tried not to duplicate that stuff. I made the video for myself and so my family could see my trip but wanted to keep the attention of whoever might watch it. I really appreciate all the nice feedback.

Hey MverNelson I have a big flat rap which is pretty much brand new (perch) but it lost its lip last week on a pike. If you think you can use it let me know otherwise it's toast. Back in the day you use to be able to get replacement lips.......or you might be able to get a lip at a lure parts company. I have about 6 or 7 more so easy come - easy go.
Lets Go!

We all had a chuckle and I definitely feel your pain when you lost your sun glasses. The parking lot was still in sight last week on our trip to Insula when I knocked mine off my head while switching sides with the paddle. It was still early in the morning and I just had them resting on my head. Before I knew it a $120 pair of glasses were gone and I'd have to go an entire trip without them. It was a bummer for sure but I will have a strap like you had on my next trip for sure.

Its funny you say that. One of the pike in that video busted the lip of that very lure but I found it and was sweating bullets whether I had packed super glue in the box. Luckily I had it and was back in action!

You are also a seriously bad ass guy. That one pack of yours is as big as a clown car! And you have so many woodcraft skills. "
Thanks Molly but that huge pack is for the lighter fluffy stuff haha! Of course nothing remains fluffy after a compression sack.

Very cool video. Going to be a first time video trip for me this Aug. I have yet to purchase camera and mounts.
Thanks for introduction to the Ned Rig. Never heard of it before. Very interesting presentation and the durability a big plus.
Thanks for sharing adventure.

Passed you on our way into knife, have to look at the map to be sure. I just remember the portage being pretty full with a solo in front of you and group of six behind you. I love the video. I definitely need to play with my GoPro a lot more. Thanks for the inspiration!
