Looking for good day tripping in the Ely area. Prefer smaller lakes or rivers ( my wife is new to paddling), fishing is a non factor. Any loops would be cool.

Bass lake for hiking (easy) or canoeing comes to mind, basically on the Echo Trail. Neat falls on the western side with a pool in the cascade.

North Hegman through South Hegman EP77 has pictographs, would be pretty easy and small water.

Both could be pretty easily done in a day with some motivation.

Plenty of options from the Lake One Entry. Go west on the Kawishiwi River instead of east into Lake 1. After the first portage, keep to the right (downstream) and go two more portages to a small waterfall, which is a great spot for lunch and then return or keep to the left (upstream) and paddle back up into Lake One and then back to the EP.

Fall Lake entry up to Pipestone Falls and back is a popular but very rewarding daytrip.

Little Indian Sioux entry up to Devils Cascade and back is a good one too but it's about an hours drive to get to the EP.

If you want to go more difficult, Mudro-Fourtown-Horse-Tin Can Mike-Sandpit-Mudro would be one whale of a loop. You better be in good shape though.

I like the Lake One and go west on Kawishiwi River. Similar Farm Lake and go east on Kawishiwi. It would be a long day but not having to make camp, you could do the loop on Kawishiwi through Clear - 25 miles. If not windy - Snowbank to Parent and/or Disappointment is nice.

The first ones that popped into my head were suggested above. Our 1st 2 daytrips when the kids were 4 and 2 were South Hegman to the pictos on North Hegman and then the Lake One entry going into the Kawishiwi River and then back around through Lake One that jdevries suggested. Both are good ones.

Another good one is using the South Kawishiwi EP 32 and Little Gabbro EP 33 entry points as their parking lots are only about a mile apart. Start at one, exit at the other, and then walk back to your car. I think it's about 6 or 7 miles paddling and portaging.
