sorry hit wrong button.... but any ways. I went on my yearly bwca fishing trip to Sawbill. We based camped on north end of sawbill and planed to fish hard every day. When we got there on June 23 we noticed lots of mayflys and dragonfly larve in the water. Fishing was difficult and we had lots of rain. Between the two of us we landed 5 smb 12 pike and 9 walleye in 7 days:( It was still a good trip, but other years have had better fishing. After a couple days of no fish we figured out a pattern. All the fish seemed to be eating the bugs on the surface at low light hours, more in the night. So last couple nights we tied on some poppers and zulus and caught some nice walleye on bass rigs. It was a blast. I still don't believe it! I can still remember reeling in that first walleye and thinking "is that a head shake no that can't be" That was a first one for me. My buddys here at home (southeast South Dakota) still don't beleve me.

My cousin fishes with basically one lure the entire trip. A torpedo. One day we were fishing a wind swept bay he cast that one lure and, pow...a walleye. I could not believe it. And still don't to this day even though I was in the same boat.

Walleye on the surface? Now that would be fun with a fly rod.

I dream of catching a halibut on a dry fly! Walleye on a dry fly would be fun.

I have caught walleye on Pop-Rs and torpedoes. Some pretty wicked hits!

I have to thank you QueticoMike for all the great info on the zulu rig! It has helped me catch more fish and not just bass. I've been putting a 1/8oz. slip weight before my snap swivel to get down to to walleye here at home and it catches more then a live bait (Most nights). Thanks for sharing, it's how we keep the sport around.

You're welcome! I enjoy helping people catch more fish.

Great story. I have run into those Mayfly and other species hatches that seem to shut down fishing. At least the night bite. I have never thought of fishing topwater. Genius. Now I hope to run into the dreaded hatch sometime again.

Thanks For Sharing!!

If you like catching smallmouth ( who doesn't, right TGO? ) take a small pop-r with you and the next time you see them picking off bugs during the hatch, whip that little pop-r right on top of the ring.

My son was pitching a Smithwick's Devil's Horse into a downed tree a couple weeks ago on Shell Lake around dusk and hooked into a 22" walleye (released). Hit it just a few feet from shore, right after the first 'twitch'. Fun stuff!

I also caught my first top water walleye recently :)

I saw fish surfacing to eat and knew from dnr net surveys that there were only walleye and suckers. It was just a matter of waiting for my mini hula popper to be discovered.
