Checked a couple days ago. There are some blue berries but 90-95% were still green. (This was on the Iron Range), I'd suspect they're a little further behind up north.

I found good picking outside of Ely on Friday and Saturday in a small patch on a sun-drenched ridge. Other than that one spot most were green.

Sawbill and north to Wine saw lots of very small green berries, a few larger ones, but nothing turning yet. The site in the bay at the north end of Kelso it appeared some bug was eating the leaves as many were damaged and I saw no berries on any of those plants.

Just finalized plan for week of Aug 7. Hope we're not too late. Bringing plenty of pancake batter in need of blueberries and raspberries.

I think you're fine. We tripped a week later last year and they were plentiful wherever we looked.

Good rains lately should help prevent drying out.

we have traditionally gone around that time but have had not much luck with Blueberries.
not to say you wont find them, that's just our experience. I hope you find so many you get sick off of them :)

so we moved up a week this year in hopes of better scrounging.
we go in July 29
I hope I did it right, or I will be tarred and feathered by our group.

Just got back from a trip last week. Found a grand total of 5 ripe ones on Horse Lake. Everything else was green.

Two years ago we were up on Brule Lake around that time and found huge numbers. Probably could have filled 2 Nalgenes if we wanted to.

Ive been up in early to mid August the last 3 years and have had good blueberry picking with some scattered raspberries as well.

I was just up along the north shore and also Ely last week and found nothing but green blueberries and an occasional wild strawberry that was ripe. The blueberries did seem to be plentiful so once ripe it should be good picking. I think late July to early August should be decent but I'm guessing blueberries will stretch into mid August.

Last year on the granite river route, same time window. The place was carpeted with them, especially our last campsite on Sag.

I was out picking east of Ely today and there were lots of ripe berries on the south facing slopes.

We just returned from the numbered lakes and we found some ripe ones. Enough to put on our pancakes. :-}

I wonder how the burn area is looking for blueberries and the burns up the Gunflint have been excellent in the past few years. This year?

I was camped out near Cook last week from the 10nth to the 15th. There were a few edible blueberries but they were small and not very sweet. Raspberries were a bit better.

I photographed these today (7/18) at the in-laws place just west of the BWCA. Peak ripening should be here by next weekend. Fruit set was poor this year, and it may take a bit more work to gather for a meal of blueberry pancakes.

I just got back from LIS North and I was in the berries all trip long. I had them with breakfast almost everyday. I'd say next week they'll be popping like crazy. There were lots that were still a little pink colored.

Mostly still green. Looks like we're still a week or so away from full rippening.

The moral of the story seems to be that location really matters. Depending on where you are you might be finding berries now or you may be a week or two out yet.

Many were eaten, while at least half are resting quietly in bottles in the wine cellar under my basement steps.

We just came out on Sunday July 16 and there were a few ripe ones but most were still green. Ones in full sun were more ripe.

Found these on Lake One. I can't answer for the rest of the lakes.

North of Crab-Cummings Lake area the blue berries were about 60-70% ripe over the 7/21-23 weekend.

From what I saw up near sea gull last week I say peak is about now.

I exited near the end of the Gunflint Trail on July 27 and there were lots of blueberries but most of them were at least a week away from ripe. I did enter one ripened blueberry in the Biggest Blueberry Contest on the Gunflint Trail. But I just saw that someone entered a 2.05 gram monster that crushed my .37 gram entry.

Driving to Gunflint Outfitters tomorrow and paddling in on Sunday. Bringing plenty of ziplocks and pancake mix. Hope to post pics of full bags, smiling faces and stained shirts.

We had to search some, but we found enough for pancakes. Looks like we were on the tail end of them. Many shriveled and on the ground, but some still green and small.

Sounds like the Gunflint area was not as good this year as recent mega crops.

08/10/2017 09:46PM
Just returned from the far eastern BW. Did not see a single blueberry

We found plenty of perfectly ripe ones for our oatmeal last week on Carl (SW of Morgan) on the Gunflint trail. Oddly, all the other blueberries we saw were still green.
