Sawbill and north to Wine saw lots of very small green berries, a few larger ones, but nothing turning yet. The site in the bay at the north end of Kelso it appeared some bug was eating the leaves as many were damaged and I saw no berries on any of those plants.

quote northallen: "Just finalized plan for week of Aug 7. Hope we're not too late. Bringing plenty of pancake batter in need of blueberries and raspberries."
we have traditionally gone around that time but have had not much luck with Blueberries.
not to say you wont find them, that's just our experience. I hope you find so many you get sick off of them :)
so we moved up a week this year in hopes of better scrounging.
we go in July 29
I hope I did it right, or I will be tarred and feathered by our group.

Just got back from a trip last week. Found a grand total of 5 ripe ones on Horse Lake. Everything else was green.
Two years ago we were up on Brule Lake around that time and found huge numbers. Probably could have filled 2 Nalgenes if we wanted to.

Ive been up in early to mid August the last 3 years and have had good blueberry picking with some scattered raspberries as well.
I was just up along the north shore and also Ely last week and found nothing but green blueberries and an occasional wild strawberry that was ripe. The blueberries did seem to be plentiful so once ripe it should be good picking. I think late July to early August should be decent but I'm guessing blueberries will stretch into mid August.

Last year on the granite river route, same time window. The place was carpeted with them, especially our last campsite on Sag.

I photographed these today (7/18) at the in-laws place just west of the BWCA. Peak ripening should be here by next weekend. Fruit set was poor this year, and it may take a bit more work to gather for a meal of blueberry pancakes.
"Said one of these men, long past seventy years of age: 'I could carry, paddle, walk and sing with any man I ever saw. I have been twenty-four years a canoe man, and forty-one years in service; no portage was ever too long for me. Fifty songs could I sing. I have saved the lives of ten voyageurs. Have had twelve wives and six running dogs. I spent all my money in pleasure. Were I young again, I should spend my life the same way over. There is no life so happy as a voyageur's life!'"

I exited near the end of the Gunflint Trail on July 27 and there were lots of blueberries but most of them were at least a week away from ripe. I did enter one ripened blueberry in the Biggest Blueberry Contest on the Gunflint Trail. But I just saw that someone entered a 2.05 gram monster that crushed my .37 gram entry.

Driving to Gunflint Outfitters tomorrow and paddling in on Sunday. Bringing plenty of ziplocks and pancake mix. Hope to post pics of full bags, smiling faces and stained shirts.
