Spent last week up in the Q, a little south of North Bay, close to Neil Island. The fishing was good, not great, but we had crazy weather for a good part of the trip and the mosquitos were off the chart. The trip in on Monday was beautiful. We canoed from Lincoln Island and headed to our camping spot. The first thing I noticed was the water was way higher than normal. I actually liked this as it made it easier to get in certain areas to fish. One of my favorite memories was seeing my buddy catch a 4lb smallie right from our campsite right after we set up the tents. He put on a plastic swim bait like we use in Louisiana for salt water fishing, and on his second cast the fish hit the bait and the fight was on. I saw the fish jump and knew it was a good fish. As soon as he landed it, we put it on the scale and it came out at 4 lbs. She was released right away and swam right back from where she came from. We headed out after this in the canoes and fished close to the camp site. I caught some nice fish on a wacky worm rig and the old faithful fluke. My goal on this trip was to target bigger fish on plastics and unfortunately I didn't succeed. I caught some good fish in the 3 lb range, but never could get the big one I was looking for. I didn't fish with any inline spinners until the second to last day as these seem to catch lots of pike which was not my goal this trip. Tuesday, Wed, and Thursday were rainy wet days as a front blew through and the fishing was tough. I did catch fish these days but it was windy, cold and wet. On Thursday afternoon the weather got right and we all ended up catching fish and also caught fish on the way out on Friday back to Lincoln Island. I ended up catching 33 fish over the week and I probably lost that many easily. They seemed to grab the fluke and hold on and not be hooked, you would fight them for a while and then they would just let go at the boat. it was so frustrating. I also lost lots of wacky worms even though I had the o rings to hook the hook through. The fish would shake their heads and there would go the worm. I did catch some on cranks, tube jigs, and Mepps #5 spinners. A crazy as the weather was I still had an awesome trip and already miss being there. I wish I was closer as living in Louisiana makes it a very long and somewhat costly trip. I'm already thinking about next year. We did have a noob (21 year old) on the trip that really caught some nice fish. He now has the fever and I'm sure he will be back to fish again. We didn't see many people at all which was awesome as you had the feeling you had the whole place to yourself. It's a tough paddle getting to the campsite but worth every hour getting there.
