I'm coming up this week to do some fishing. Anyone have any good Smallmouth info they are willing to share? Type of structure thats been productive, baits that have been working, that kind of stuff.

I have a buddy up there right now in a campground. He said the smallmouth fishing is slow and the water is much higher than normal. Not what you want to hear, but things could be a lot different by next week.

I would rather be fishing when it's slow than baking in the high 90's. I thought I would try some plastics, swim baits maybe try drop shotting. Any thoughts on these?

I don't see any reason those presentations wouldn't work in the right area.

Swimbaits work extremely well up there, this time of year concentrate on reefs and structure near deep water, and any current areas especially those that are near deep water.

It's been a little slow. Bring it all and figure it out. The water is high and coolish for this time of year.

Yep white plastic swim baits with either 1/16 or 1/8 oz jig heads worked pretty well. Didn't catch numbers but all very nice size, one big ole smallie, a big walleye, for me at least, and a couple of nice northerns in about an hour. 1/16 oz seemed to work the best. Small weed patches on shallow points next to deep water. 4" plastic didn't work as well as 3 - 3 1/2".

Does anyone have any info on smallmouth up on the Gunflint. I'm interested in Popular and Hungry Jack lakes. Not in the BWCA but close, can I still ask??

Hungry Jack is an awesome smallie lake, I have fished it for 30 years and the smallies have gotten bigger ever since the catch and release regs have been in place, plus its a beautiful lake. I was up in June and I can tell you I released many many of them back in the lake for you to catch ! Caught one of my biggest ever on Hungry Jack back in the day and they were plentiful in June .

Hey Quacker1,

I received your email requesting to read my fishing article, but you did not specify which one you would like to read, I have many. Please send another email with what article you are looking for.

Smallies all over that lake the reef on the east end is a good spot to start its marked with buoys and its huge. The first dropoff all over the lake is good also.

Basspro thanks for the Hungry Jack info. I did go out last week didn't know there was no public boat access. The lodge does have a landing you can use for a fee. I did fish the large reef you mentioned and the shore line along the east end. Only managed one small fish. Don't know if the cold front worked against me or I just don't know WTF I'm doing anymore, leaning toward the latter. I'll be back up to the north shore the end of August for a few weeks, I'll give it another try then.
