Taking a trip with some Navy friends up to East Pike and wondering if anyone had any suggestions on fishing, portages, anything in the area that might be worth seeing. I think were going to base there and hop lakes during the day for some fishing. Thank you
The site on the southern shore is much better than the one on the west end, and is good for day tripping out of since it's more centrally located. The eastern site looked nice, but I've never stayed in it. As for fishing, I remember lots of bass in the narrows at the west end and tons of northerns all over. West Pike and Pine are worth a look for lake trout. There's also the hiking trail if you're looking for some off-water exploring. That area is a very scenic part the BWCA with many steep hills and ridges.
While I've camped on East Pike several times, I haven't stayed there since the brutal winter of 2014, when our thermometer bottomed out at -30F one night. You've picked a better time of year to go there :)
I was just there last week. We stayed on the center campsite and liked it. We were the only people on the lake the whole time we were there (one night). We were just passing through on our way in a big circle tour of that area. Sorry, we didn't fish.
Re: maps. We had Fisher, Voyager and McKenzie among the members of our group. The McKenzie showed a portage out of East Pike that wasn't on the other maps. It went to McFarland Lake. We have no idea if this portage really exists. We found the Fisher map to be the most accurate for this region.
What is your EP? If you go through Pine, Johnson falls is a must-see
