Instead of hijacking a great thread filled with enthusiasm and positivity, I thought I would post my comment in another fun thread. Please read the first thread before reading on. Please keep any comments on the light side, well intended and for fun only.

Here is the first thread:

I wasn't offended in the least but I finally figured out why no one invites me along anymore ;-)

So, I guess I'll have to go solo. It's not like I don't already plan the trips, pull the permits, buy the food, pack all the gear, provide canoes and packs, filter all the water, cook, clean, cut firewood and just generally think of everything. I'm the trip leader more often than not. I guess I had a few gripes.

If someone else could figure out how to boil water and dump food into a pot and stir, I wouldn't have anything to complain about. Don't get me started on the dishes :-)

I have to admit, once in awhile someone else figures out how to get something done in camp without asking. For instance, when they take an hour out of their busy day of watching me do everything to supply freshly green tree limbs and punky rotten wood for our fire. I love a good smoky fire, it keeps the mosquitoes at bay. It was a nice gesture and I appreciate their enthusiasm for helping...I really do.

I know how my wife feels now and she complains a lot too. It all makes sense now.

So now that I have the qualities no one appreciates, I wonder how they'll manage without me. I wish them all the best of luck and happy camping.

I might need to start a new complainers and trip leader group so we can gripe about the rest of the crew. Maybe I'm alone here...maybe not, we'll see.

(Disclaimer: this message was all for fun and I'm being sarcastic)

Haha... I see what you're saying. I started soloing more because I built myself up to trips a lot. So to have people always two days into a ten-day trip trying to cut it into a six-day trip didn't go well with me.

Or the one guy who's one purpose is to cut and split wood and burn it as fast as he can gather it so there is nothing for when you'd like a fire when during such time when you and other trip mates have done all the chores. They would stop to eat, I'll give them that.

And those with little or no regard to hygene... we get grimy and all, but I'm talking about for example, going the bathroom and returning to dip unclean hands in a common gorp bag.

I love soloing because paddlin' pals are too sleepy to rise at four and once we reach a lake chock full of fish, they don't want to reach another because that takes time and sweat. Then they want to split on the gas 50/50 because that's oh-so-fair when it's my SUV that takes the beating. I love soloing because they use my lures and lose my lures and say they'll make it square at the end, but never, ever do.

There is a LOT of truth in those words though........

Man, that is a serious party foul.......

There are no community gorp bags on my trips, and I'm the cook for most meals, so I know what hygiene is being performed.

Vehicles are always an issue for us. Guy who drives doesn't pay gas, and we pay for oil change before and after trip. (2000 miles round trip).

The group also plays for trailer repairs, and we generally charge $20.00 - $50.00 /person per trip to put in the trailer kitty. Then the SHTF and the trailer pukes or something, the entire cost of that expense is split by the 6 people or 4 people on that trip. WE had a total rebuild of the suspension and axle, and hubs a few years ago. That was fun.

The group has also been known to pay for trailer hitches for folks if their vehicle doesn't have one and it is the only vehicle that can go. If we have to take 2 vehicles, all fuel for both vehicles is figured together and the fuel cost is split between all people for both vehicles. This is because the jetta that gets 50 mpg isn't pulling a big ass trailer with the 4 people's gear......YEA you got up there for 20-30 bucks each, but you gear cost 100/each to haul. Only FAIR, or you can put your canoe and packs in that jetta......

It is all common sense, and has been developed over a 30 year timeframe, with 30 or 40 people going each year.

Later,

Geo

Geo, your group is righteous.

Tell 'em I said, "Right on, right on."

TP is in a round Tupperware at the foot of the trail. That's a trick I learned here so you know if the loo is open or not.

Bottle of Purell in with the TP. No excuse not to disinfect.

Our only gripe over the years was someone who loved to sprint all day, was always ahead of us so we saw little wildlife, and then would tire early and we'd all have to stop. We're more in the slow endurance mode. Just didn't mesh well.

Had one trip where for the first two days I felt like my wife and I were doing everything. But then our nephews figured out the tasks and we had a week of luxury like we were at a 5 star hotel.

And no common Gorp. each bag is a custom mix done by the person, for the person, and only for that person.

TP is up the trail, likewise......

And we usually use a big stick across the path or a spare paddle to mark occupied or not. Hand sanitizer is up there too.

I also usually have a big bottle of purell on the camp table, and if you pick up ANYTHING group related for cooking or cleaning, I expect you to take a squirt or two....

We do as much as we can to keep from getting sick up there.
